Transaxle Side Seals, M/T
Special Tools
- Tool No. 999 1801, or equivalent
- Prying tool No. 999 5462, or equivalent
- Tool No. 999 5541, or equivalent
NOTE: The Procedure is the same for both sides unless stated otherwise.
Procedure
1. Removing front wheel.
Disconnect brake pipe and ABS lead bracket.
- Let bracket hang free.
Disconnect link arm from anti-roll bar.
Remove nuts holding link arm/ball joint and unhook link arm from ball joint.
Take care not to damage ball joint bellows (gaiter)!
2. LH side:
- Disconnect driveshaft from transmission, using prying tool tool No. 999 5462, or equivalent, between transmission and inside of drive shaft.
Bend MacPherson strut back and remove driveshaft from transmission.
- Rest driveshaft end on subframe.
3. RH side:
Remove splashguard under engine. (Earlier models only.)
Remove driveshaft support bearing cover.
Pull out driveshaft innards, bending McPherson strut back.
- Let driveshaft end rest on pipe running to steering gear.
4. Remove driveshaft seal.
- Use a lever.
5. Installing new driveshaft seal.
- Grease seal lip lightly.
- Use drift tool No. 999 5541 and shaft tool No. 999 1801, or equivalent.
NOTE: Do not use old style drift (tool No. 999 5478).
LH side:
- Put the side of the drift marked "M56" against the driveshaft seal.
RH side
- Put the side of the drift marked "M56" against the driveshaft seal, and turn as shown in picture on right.
Tap driveshaft in gently until drift Is touching transmission casing.
6. Installing driveshafts.
NOTE: Take care not to damage driveshaft seals or boot (gaiter).
RH driveshaft:
- Install bearing cap. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 ft. Lb.).
- Install splashguard under engine. (Earlier models).
LH driveshaft:
Push driveshaft in properly so it locks into the circlip in the differential slot.
Make sure driveshaft circlip engages in slot.
Check by pushing in driveshaft inboard universal joint carefully.
7. Install:
- Link arm to ball joint. Use new nuts.
NOTE: Check that mating surfaces on ball joint and link arm are clean and free of grease.
Tighten nuts Inside and out to: 18 Nm+120°.
Use protractor tool No. 951 2050, or equivalent.
Apply rustproofing agent to the area between the ball joint, link arm and nut correctly and precisely.
Use rustproofing agent part No. 1161432-8, or equivalent.
- Link arm to anti-roll bar (use new nuts) and tighten to: 50 Nm.
8. Install:
- Brake pipe and ABS lead bracket.
Check transmission on level and top up as necessary.
- Tighten to: 35 Nm.
9. Install:
- Wheel.
Check that brake disc and pad contact surfaces are clean.
Grease hub center in front of pads with rustproofing agent 1161405-4.
Install bolts, but do not tighten.
Now tighten them in pairs to: 110 Nm.
When tightening with socket wrench, use torque sleeve 1158147-7.
