Shifter M/T: Service and Repair



Special Tools
- Drift tool No. 999 2412, or equivalent
- underlay ring No. 999 2852, or equivalent

- Refer to special tool section for additional tool information. Tools and Equipment

Preparation
- Remove shift refer to steps 4, 6 and 7 of Selector Cable, M/T replacement. Service and Repair

Procedure





1. Remove:
- Link plate clip
- Link plate and bushings
- Ball and socket joint from shift lever link plate.
(If only replacing bushings or link plate, see step 5).





2. Replacing shift lever and shift lever ball and socket joint:
Fix shift lever casing in a vice.
Remove shift lever knob and boot (gaiter) from lever (steps 1 and 2 of Shift Knob and Boot Replacement).
To remove shift lever ball and socket joint from shift lever casing, ease up socket locking tabs.
Lift ball and socket joint and shift lever from shift lever casing.
- Replace ball and socket joint and/or shin lever as necessary.





3. Fitting socket to shift lever
Stand socket in hot water for a while.
Press socket onto shift lever ball, lubricate using grease part No. 1161236-3, or equivalent.





4. Put shift lever housing on bench
Check that O-ring in aluminium bracket seat is undamaged and lying flat against the bottom.
Fit ball and socket joint and skim lever to shift lever housing.
- Use drift tool No. 999 2412 and underlay ring tool No 999 2852, or equivalents.
Tap ball and socket joint into place in shift lever housing.





5. Lubricating link plate bushings and ball and socket joints with grease part No. 1161236-3, or equivalent.
Install:
- Link plate bushings onto shift lever housing.
- Ball and socket joint to shift link rod
- Link plate to shin lever housing.
At the same time, guide link plate onto shin lever link rod and fit washer and clip.
6. Fit shift lever housing
See steps 10 through 14 of Selector Cable, M/T replacement. Service and Repair

NOTE:
- Lubricate selector cable ball and socket joints with grease part No. 1161236-3, or equivalent.
- If shift lever knob and boot (gaiter) have been removed, install these when shift lever housing and tunnel console are in place.
