Power Train
1st Gear (1GR)
When 1GR is engaged, a selector fork moves the 1sV2nd synchromesh sleeve (15) along the synchromesh hub towards the freely-rotating 1st gearwheel (14). The synchromesh sleeve and hub lock the 1st gearwheel on the lower layshaft (B).
From the clutch, power from the engine passes via the input shaft (2) to the 1st gear (8) and 1st gearwheel (14), via the synchromesh unit and lower layshaft (B) on to the final drive pinion (7) and out to the final drive (5).
2nd Gear (2GR)
When 2GR is engaged, the selector fork moves the 1sV2nd synchromesh sleeve (15) along the synchromesh hub towards the freely-rotating 2nd gearwheel (16). The synchromesh sleeve and hub then lock the 2nd gearwheel to the lower layshaft (B)
From the clutch, power from the engine passes via the input shaft (2) to the 2nd gear (9) and 2nd gearwheel (16), via the synchromesh unit and lower output shaft (B) to the final drive pinion (7) and final drive (5).
3rd Gear (3GR)
When 3GR is engaged, the selector fork moves the 3rd/4th synchromesh sleeve (12) towards the freely-rotating 3rd gearwheel (13). The synchromesh sleeve and hub then lock the 3rd gearwheel (13) on the primary shaft (A).
From the clutch, power from the engine passes via the input shaft (2) and the synchromesh unit on the primary shaft (A) to the 3rd gearwheel (13). From here, it passes to the 3rd gear (18) on the lower output shaft (B) and final drive pinion (7) to the final drive (5).
4th Gear (4GR)
When 4GR is selected, the selector fork moves the 3rd/4th synchromesh sleeve (12) along the synchromesh hub towards the freely-rotating 4th gearwheel (11). The synchromesh sleeve and hub then lock the 4th gearwheel (11 ) on the primary shaft (A).
From the clutch, power from the engine passes via the input shaft (2), the synchromesh unit on the primary shaft (A) to the 4th gear (11). From here, it passes to 4th gear (17) on the lower layshaft (B) and via the final drive pinion (7) to the final drive (5).
5th Gear (5GR)
When 5GR is selected, the selector fork moves the 5th/reverse synchromesh sleeve (20) along the synchromesh hub towards the freely-rotating 5th gearwheel (21). The synchromesh sleeve and hub then lock the 5th gearwheel (21 ) on the upper layshaft (C).
From the clutch, power from the engine passes via the input shaft (2) 5th gear (10) on primary shaft (A) to the 5th gearwheel (21 ) on upper layshaft (C), the synchromesh unit and via the final drive pinion (6) to the final drive (5).
Reverse
When engaging reverse, the selector fork moves the 5th/reverse synchromesh sleeve (20) along the synchromesh hub towards the freely-rotating reverse gearwheel (19). The synchromesh sleeve and hub then lock the reverse gearwheel (19) on the upper output shaft (C).
From the clutch, power from the engine passes via the input shaft (2), 1st gear (8) on the primary shaft (A) to the 1st gearwheel/reverse idler gear (14) on the lower layshaft (B). From here, it passes to the reverse gearwheel (19) on the upper layshaft (C) via the synchromesh unit and final drive pinion (6) to final drive (5).
This patented idea of combining the 1st gearwheel and intermediate reverse gear in a single wheel removes the need for a separate reverse idler shaft, so that synchromesh is also available in reverse.
