Backrest Motor and Potentiometer

WARNING: Seats with SIPS bag must always have the transport safety device installed in order to avoid accidentally activating the system when working on the seat.

Removing

Preparations
- Make a note of radio code if anti-theft coded radio is installed.
- Disconnect battery negative lead.
- Cars with SIPS airbag: install the safety device.
- Remove seat from car.

Removal of upholstery
- Remove backrest upholstery.
- Remove impact protection from the backrest frame.

CAUTION: Cars with SIPS airbag: Take care not to damage the SIPS airbag ignition cable.

Separating the connectors

Seat with memory
- Separate the connector for the seat heater pad.
- Separate the 14-pin gray connector B at the control module.
- Press out wires at positions 1 and 2 from connector. Use terminal removal tool 951 2631.

Removing the lumbar support




- Detach lumbar support spring holder on the insides if necessary.
- Detach plastic holder by freeing guide-pins.
- Remove the lumbar support.

Removal of motor




- Place seat on side with the backrest motor downward.
- Unhook the spring retainer.
- Unhook spring from the backrest spring section in order to expose cable and wiring.
- Remove M7 nut securing motor bracket to seat frame.
- Lift motor clear by turning and pulling down so that upper bracket hook releases from the seatback frame.

Removing brackets and drive cables




- Place the motor in front of the backrest.
- Detach the bracket's four upper and lower screws from the motor.
- Remove drive cables.

Removing potentiometer (power seat with memory)
- Remove potentiometer from motor.
- Disconnect the 3-pin connector.

Reinstalling cables and brackets
- Reinstall upper drive cables and if necessary potentiometer.
- Screw down bracket.
- Install the lower drive cable and screw down bracket.

Reinstalling the motor.




- Place the motor in position so that the cable is behind the lumbar support band.
- Clamp the long cable between the lumbar support and the padding. This is to prevent noise caused by cable contacting upholstery and padding.
- Install the lumbar support in the plastic holder.
- Work the upper hook of the bracket into the hole (arrowed in the picture).
- Tighten nut which holds lower bracket to seatback frame.
- Hook on the coil spring.

Finishing off
- Install upholstery
- Reinstall seat in the car.
- Cars with SIPS airbag: remove the safety device.
- Replace battery negative lead.
