Engine Lubrication: Description and Operation

Oil from the sump is pumped to the external cooler (when the thermostat is open), passing through the full-flow filter. Mounted directly underneath the pump, the filter is sealed against the sump.

Leaving the filter, the oil passes to the crankshaft main bearings through a passage cast in the intermediate section of the block. The big end bearings are lubricated through passages drilled in the crankshaft.

The camshafts and hydraulic tappets are lubricated through a passage drilled in the left front end of the block.

Continuing through the lower half of the cylinder head, this passage discharges to the underside of the upper half, from where the oil is further distributed through channels supplying the camshaft bearings and tappets on the lefthand (intake) side.

The right-hand camshaft and exhaust tappets are lubricated through a lateral passage cast in the front end of the upper half of the head.

The oil is returned to the sump through drain passages in the block and crankshaft bearings.
