Fault-Tracing Overview

Fault-tracing Using the Volvo Scan Tool
- If the engine cooling fan (FC) is running when the ignition is off, disconnect engine cooling fan when it stops, before commencing fault-tracing.
- Read off and note diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and status messages.
- If communication with the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) cannot be established, refer to Communication Problems With Volvo Scan Tool.

Has a diagnostic trouble code been stored?

- Yes:

- No:

Read Section I
- Remedy cause of diagnostic trouble code and erase.
- Do the fault symptoms persist?

- Yes:

- No:

- Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures
- Select a matching fault symptom and remedy according to instructions.

Do the fault symptoms persist?

- Yes:

- Connecting the Breakout Box
- Connect breakout box and take readings on all terminals.
- Then continue with: Conclusion section.

Conclusion
- Check that no diagnostic trouble codes have been stored during fault-tracing in the fuel/ignition system, automatic transmission or combined instrument panel.
- Erase any diagnostic trouble codes before returning the car to the customer.
