Connecting the Breakout Box
Connecting Breakout Box to Connector A (black)
- Ignition off.
- Disconnect engine control module (ECM).
NOTE: The engine control module must not be removed from the car until the main relay has interrupted its power supply. This may take up to 150 seconds after the ignition has been switched off.
- Connect adapter 951 1351 to engine control module connector and connect breakout box 981 3190 to adapter.
- Proceed to: Checking Ground Terminals section below.
Checking Ground Terminals
- Ignition off.
- Switch off all equipment that takes power from the battery (courtesy lighting, radio etc).
- Connect an ohmmeter between battery negative terminal and:
- # 13 (# A13) on the breakout box.
- # 28 (# A28) on the breakout box.
- # 42 (# A42) on the breakout box.
- Is the reading 0 ohms in all cases?
Yes:
^ Return to fault-tracing procedure where it was interrupted.
No:
^ Check ground terminal 31/53 on left side member in engine compartment and cables for an open-circuit, contact resistance and oxidation.
^ Check ground lead between battery and chassis for an open-circuit, contact resistance and oxidation.
Connecting Breakout Box to Connector B (gray)
- Ignition off.
- Disconnect engine control module (ECM).
NOTE: The engine control module must not be removed from the car until the main relay has interrupted its power supply. This may take up to 150 seconds after the ignition has been switched off.
- Connect adapter 951 1351 to engine control module connector and connect breakout box 981 3190 to adapter.
- Will the engine control module be connected when readings are taken on connector B?
Yes:
^ Proceed to: Checking Ground Terminal # B28 section below.
No:
^ Return to fault-tracing procedure where it was interrupted.
Checking Ground Terminal # B28
- Ignition off.
- Switch off all equipment that takes power from the battery (courtesy lighting, radio etc).
- Connect engine control module (ECM).
- Connect an ohmmeter between # 28 (# B28) on the breakout box and battery negative terminal.
- The ohmmeter should read approx. 0 ohms.
If reading is OK:
^ Return to fault-tracing procedure where it was interrupted.
If reading is incorrect:
^ Check ground terminal 31/53 on left side member in engine compartment and cables for an open-circuit, contact resistance and oxidation.
