Engine Lubrication: Description and Operation
Lubrication System
Oil is pumped from the oil pump to the full-flow oil filter. The filter is located directly beneath the oil pump and is sealed against the oil sump which is included in the lubrication system.
From the filter oil is pumped through an oil way, cast into the intermediate section, to the main bearings. Oil is then pumped via oil ways drilled in the crankshaft to the big ends.
Camshafts and hydraulic tappets are lubricated via an oil way drilled into the left front edge of the engine block.
The oil way continues through the cylinder head, discharging into the underside of the cylinder head upper half. From there it continues via an oil way to the left camshaft bearing and tappets (intake side).
The right hand camshaft bearings and tappets (exhaust side) are supplied via an oil way cast across the front edge of the upper half of the cylinder head.
Oil is returned to the oil sump from the cylinder head and crankshaft bearings.
