Information about faults and other information can be read using the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) connected to the Data Link Connector (DLC). The Volvo Scan Tool communicates with the Transmission Control Module (TCM) via a standardized interface.
To Connect the Volvo Scan Tool refer to Testing and Inspection. Testing and Inspection

Using The Volvo Scan Tool It Is Possible To:

- Read out and erase stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), counters and frozen values.
- Activate components/functions according to a certain set routine
- Continuously read the values and status of the system's input and output signals
- Read control module identification
- The data link connector is common for the Volvo On-board Diagnostics system (OBD) and the On Board Diagnostics II (OBD II) system which is a statutory requirement.

To Activate The Volvo On-board Diagnostic system:

- Ignition must be on.
- Battery voltage must be over 11.0 volts

To Activate Components/Functions:

- The car must not be in motion, its speed must be 0 km/h.
- Gear selector in position P or N

Connecting The Volvo Scan Tool (ST):

- Ignition off
- Install the memory cassette
- Connect the Volvo Scan Tool using the data link connector wiring in the bracket in front of the gear selector.
- Ignition on
- Power up the Volvo Scan Tool
- Select language, car and function group
- Select system
- Select activity (readout, erase DTCs, activate components etc.)
