Summary of New Features
Summary of new features
The P23 has three engine alternatives; a turbocharged five cylinder (B5204T), a normally aspirated six cylinder (B6304S) and a biturbocharged six cylinder (B6284T). All engines are equipped with the ME 7.0 engine management system
1. The oil cooler is a flat heat exchanger which is directly installed against the oil pan and sealed with O-rings. When the engine is lifted out of the car it must be placed on trestles otherwise the oil cooler can be damaged.
2. A variable camshaft (Continuous Variable Valve Timing) with a control valve has been introduced on the exhaust side for the turbocharged engines and on the intake side for the B6304S. The control valve (CVVT valve) is controlled by the Engine Control Module (ECM).
3. The thermostat housing on 6 cylinder engines has been moved to the front edge of the engine. The thermostat function can be fault-traced in the VIDA symptom input, (the engine does not become warm). This is an important function because thermostats are frequently replaced when they are not faulty.
4. A new and larger vibration damper has been introduced on all engines. The new vibration damper must be removed in place before the engine can be removed because one of the front engine mounting bolts cannot be accessed otherwise.
- 5. The pistons in the B6304S are lighter and have a different shape to the current type. A new three section oil ring has been introduced. Piston pins are lighter (shorter, smaller diameter) than the current pins.
- 6. The B6304S connecting rods are longer. Fractured connecting rods have been introduced to ensure perfect compatibility. When joining the mating surfaces must be dry.
- 7. The 6 cylinder naturally aspirated engine intake valve head diameter is 1 mm (0.039in) in larger (32 mm (1.26 in)). The valve stem has been machined down to a diameter of 6 mm (0.24 in) in down the head. The corrective action provide a greater and more even flow.
The conical valve springs are on the engines with variable camshafts (Continuous Variable Valve Timing (CVVT)). Conical springs have greater progressive resistance and the moving mass is lower than cylindrical springs.
The upper valve spring washer for the valves with the conical valve springs is new. The washer is lighter than the current one. Together with the hydraulic tappet the moving mass is reduced in weight by 30 g.
- 8. The 6 cylinder engine oil pump has been modified internally and has therefore been made slimmer.
- 9. The 6 cylinder naturally aspirated engine crankshaft has the same machined area as the current one, but is significantly lighter than the current crankshaft.
