Sealing ring in the viscous coupling, replacement

Background
The sealing ring for the viscous coupling on the drive shaft is now available as a replacement part. A special tool has been introduced for installing the sealing ring.

This Service Bulletin describes how to replace the sealing ring.

Preparatory work 1

To remove the driveshaft and viscous coupling, see VADIS:

Group 4, Removing, replacing and installing 46 Rear axle, drive shaft Drive shaft (left-hand drive)





There are two types of sealing rings. 2

- outer diameter 42 mm (1.7") (early version),
- outer diameter 47 mm (1.9") (late version).

Position the viscous coupling in a vise with soft jaws. 3





Sealing ring 42 mm (1.7") (early version)

Cut away a piece of the sealing ring lip.

Use a heavy screwdriver with a broad tip.

Tap the screwdriver in to make a notch in the metal holder for the sealing ring. Then press hard and pry the seal out.

Note!
Do not insert the screwdriver between the sealing ring and needle bearing.

Sealing ring 47 mm (1.9") (late version) Position the screwdriver under the seal lip. Pry out the seal.

Note!
Check that no dirt gets info the needle bearing.

Installing the sealing ring 4

Lubricate the sealing ring lip. Use wheel bearing grease, P/N 1161241-3

Note!
Drift 9995772 has two sides:
A. The side without the hole is for 42 mm early version sealing rings.
B. The side with the hole is for 47 mm later version sealing rings.

Using the side of the drift without the hole, install the sealing ring on the drift with the tapered edge facing outward towards the viscous coupling.

Tap in the seal until the drift meets the viscous coupling.

Using the side of the drift with the hole, install the sealing ring on the drift with the seal spring facing outward towards the viscous coupling.

Tap in the seal until the drift meets the viscous coupling.
