Checking Fuel Pump (FP)
Checking the fuel pump (FP)
Checking the fuel pump (FP)
- Ignition on
- Check that the fuel pump (FP) starts. It should be clearly audible. The fuel pump should operate for approximately 2 seconds after the ignition is switched on.
Does the fuel pump (FP) start?
Yes - Checking the fuel pressure
No - Checking the system relay
-------------------------------------------------
Checking the fuel pressure
- Check the fuel pressure according to Checking the fuel pressure while driving Checking The Fuel Pressure While Driving
- Remedy as necessary.
Other information
- To replace the fuel pump (FP), see Fuel pump, replacement Service and Repair
- To replace the pressure regulator, see Replacing the leak diagnostic pump Removal and Replacement.
Was a fault detected?
Yes - Verification
No - Checking the ignition system
-------------------------------------------------
Checking the ignition system
Check for moisture in the spark plug wells.
Check the spark plugs for damage and wear. If there is any doubt about their function, replace the spark plugs.
Check the ignition coil ground terminals for contact resistance and oxidation according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring And Terminals. Permanent Fault.
Remedy as necessary.
Reinstall the components and connectors.
Select Continue.
Continue - Verification
-------------------------------------------------
Checking the system relay
- Ignition on
- Activate system relay 2/14
- Check that system relay 2/14 clicks when it is activated.
Does the system relay click when it is activated?
Yes - Checking the connectors and fuse
No - Checking the wiring
-------------------------------------------------
Checking the connectors and fuse
- Check fuse 20 in the integrated relay / fusebox in the engine compartment. If the fuse is blown, check the circuit after the fuse for a short-circuit to ground according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring And Terminals. Permanent Fault
- Check the fuel pump (FP) terminal for contact resistance and oxidation according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring And Terminals. Permanent Fault.
Other information
- To access the fuel pump (FP), see Fuel pump, replacement Service and Repair.
Select Continue.
Continue - Checking the component
-------------------------------------------------
Checking the component
- Reconnect the fuel pump (FP) connector
- Ignition on
- Check whether the fuel pump (FP) operates when the ignition is switched on. The fuel pump (FP) must operate for 2 seconds.
Does the fuel pump (FP) operate when the ignition is switched on?
Yes - Verification
No - Checking the wiring
-------------------------------------------------
Checking the wiring
- Ignition off
- Check the cable between system relay terminal #3 and fuel pump (FP) terminal #D for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring And Terminals. Permanent Fault and the ground lead for fuel pump (FP) terminal #B for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring And Terminals. Permanent Fault
- Check the voltage between terminals B and D on the fuel pump (FP) connector. The voltage must be approximately 12 volts for 2 seconds when the ignition is switched on
- Try a new fuel pump (FP) if no fault is found during the above fault-tracing
- Remedy as necessary.
Other information
- To access / replace the fuel pump (FP), see Fuel pump, replacement Service and Repair.
