Trailing Arm: Service and Repair
Replacing the trailing arm
Special tools:
951 2834 Torque socket 21mm S/V40 951 2834 Torque socket 21mm S/V40
Slacken off or remove the trailing arm mounting
Remove the cover plate.
Remove the screw from the front rubber bushing.
Remove the control arm for toe-in adjustment, see operation Front rubber bushing in trailing arm, replacing Service and Repair.
Remove the rear wheel
Remove the hub cap.
Remove the wheel nuts and the wheel.
Remove the parking brake cable from the brake caliper
Remove the rear center console.
Align the parking brake.
Remove the retaining clip.
Remove the parking brake cable from the brake caliper support. Unhook the inner cable from the brake lever.
Remove the parking brake cable from the trailing arm.
Remove the brake caliper
Remove the clamp. Take the brake hose out of the support.
Remove the brake caliper and support. Hang the brake caliper from a steel wire so as not to damage the brake hose.
Caution! Do not depress the brake pedal while the brake caliper is removed.
Remove components from the trailing arm
Remove
- the hub cap, the center nut
- the whole hub and the brake disc
- the 4 screws. Remove the splashguard and the support from the hub
- The ABS sensor. See Front wheel sensor, replacement Front Wheel Sensor, Replacement and Rear wheel sensor, replacement Rear Wheel Sensor, Replacement
- the ABS line from the trailing arm.
Remove the support arm
Support the lower control arm.
Remove the mounting for the lower control arm. Remove the upper control arm on the trailing arm.
Remove the screw from the front rubber bushing. Remove the trailing arm.
Install the trailing arm
Install the bolts in the trailing arm, in the front mounting point and in the lower arm. Finger tighten.
Install the control arm for toe-in adjustment on the trailing arm. Tighten to 35 Nm.
Install the components on the trailing arm
Note! For information about installing the ABS sensor, see Front wheel sensor, replacement Front Wheel Sensor, Replacement and Rear wheel sensor, replacement Rear Wheel Sensor, Replacement.
Clean the surrounding area.
Install:
- the ABS sensor
- the support and the splashguard on the hub. Tighten to 55 Nm
- the ABS line on the trailing arm
- the complete hub with the brake disc. Install a new center nut. Tighten to -97 175 Nm, 98- 120 NmAngle-tighten 30°.
Install the brake caliper
Install the brake caliper and the support. Tighten to 55 Nm.
Install the brake hose in the support. Install the retaining clip.
Install the parking brake cable
Install the parking brake cable on the trailing arm.
Hook the inner cable into the brake lever.
Pull the outer cable in to the support. Install the retaining clip.
Install the wheel
Check that the brake disc and wheel rim mating surfaces are clean. Lubricate the center guide for the hub. Use rustproofing agent P/N 1161038-3. Position the wheel and lightly tighten the nuts.
Then tighten crosswise. Tighten to 110 Nm.
If a socket wrench is used when tightening, socket 951 2834 Torque socket 21mm S/V40 951 2834 Torque socket 21mm S/V40 must be used.
Post tighten the nuts by hand.
Caution! The correct tightening torques and crosswise tightening are important to avoid stresses in the brake disc
Install the hub cap.
Adjust the parking brake cable
Remove the three screws. Remove the ashtray. Remove the rear bracket.
Check that the tab is at an approximate right angle. Check the parking brake cables and the brake clamp if necessary.
Turn the lock nut until the lever arms on the brake clamp lie exactly against the stop pins on both sides.
Check that the rear wheels can rotate when the parking brake is not applied.
Ensure that the central parking brake cable is always under tension.
Install the rear bracket.
Tighten the trailing arm
Remove the support and bounce the car a few times.
Turn the adjustment screw to the previous position.
Tighten:
- the screw on the lower control arm. Tighten to 90 Nm
- the screw on the upper control arm. Tighten to 90 Nm
- the screw on the bodywork. Tighten to 90 Nm.
