Supplemental Restraint System
Vehicles with SRS (Airbag)/SIPS bag
WARNING:
Vehicles equipped with SRS (Supplemental Restraint System)/SIPS bag must be handled with extra care when carrying out repairs. This avoids:
1. Personal injuries occurring during repair work.
2. Damage to or faulty function of the SRS/SIPS bag systems.
Work involving the SRS/SIPS bag systems or other components in the vehicle that is likely to affect the SRS/SIPS bag systems should always be carried out by an authorized Volvo workshop. In case of doubt, consult the SRS and SIPS bag service information.
Does the vehicle have SRS/SIPS bags?
Vehicles with SRS are easiest to recognize as they have the letters SRS written on the center plate of the steering wheel. If the vehicle also has an airbag on the passenger side, the letters SRS are stamped on the dashboard above the glove box. SRS vehicle models from 1993 onwards also have explosive seatbelt tensioners in the B pillars.
SIPS-bags are only fitted to SRS vehicles from 1995 onwards. SIPS bag decals are located e.g. in the windscreen and on the seat compartment.
Dashboard or round steering-column cover
Ensure that the SRS wires are not trapped, rubbed or drilled through by screws when working on the sound wall, knee protection, ignition lock, steering-column covers, glove box and dashboard, as well as sills and B pillars.
Tunnel console
The SRS impact sensor SRS is located between the handbrake and the gear lever in the center console. Never install accessories by the sensor.
Steering and front end work
Where applicable, work on the steering wheel, steering shaft or steering gear must be carried out in accordance with the methods in the SRS service information. The contact reel will be damaged if the steering wheel is turned more than three times in either direction
Seats
The SIPS bag sensor unit is located to the front of the seat compartment. The SIPS bag can be released by hitting or pressing against the seat compartment or by objects being caught against the seat compartment when the door is closed. When working on the seats, see the service information on the SIPS bag.
