Supplemental Restrain System (SRS)
Supplemental Restrain System (SRS)
Warning! The components in the supplemental restraint system SRS and side air bags SIPS must be handled very carefully during repair. This avoids:
1. Personal injuries occurring during repair work.
2. Damage to or faulty function of the supplemental restraint system SRS/SIPS systems.
Warning! Work involving the supplemental restraint system SRS/SIPS or other components in the vehicle that is likely to affect the supplemental restraint system should always be done by an authorized Volvo workshop.
Note: For further information on safety and repairs, refer to the relevant section of Restraint Systems.
The vehicle is equipped with three types of explosive air bags and explosive seat belt tensioners.
The vehicle has the letters SRS inscribed on the center of the steering wheel and on the dashboard above the glove compartment to indicate that the vehicle is equipped with both driver and passenger air bags.
There are side air bags in both the front seats. A SIPS bag label is stuck on the windscreen and the seat to indicate that side air bags are installed.
There is a stamping on the CD panel with the letters IC (Inflatable Curtain). The vehicle is supplied with inflatable curtains as standard, but can be ordered with the inflatable curtains de-activated.
The car is equipped with explosive seat belt tensioners for all seat belts.
All the SRS components are activated by signals from various electrical sensors.
Cables
Make sure the SRS wires do not rub, get caught, or get damaged by screws when working around the following components:
- Sound wall
- Glove compartment
- Dashboard
- Steering column covers
- Ignition lock
- Sills
- All pillars
- Roof
- Rear shelf.
SRS control unit (SRS module)
The supplemental restraint system SRS control unit between the handbrake and the gear lever in the center console.
Sensor
There are 5 impact sensors for SRS/SIPS in the B-pillars, CD-pillars and in the SRS control unit. These control all the components in the SRS/SIPS (4 air bags, 2 inflatable curtains, 5 seat belt tensioners).
Never install accessories on or by the sensors in the vehicle.
Signal communication
The sensor units for the explosive components are located in the body.
These can be operated by hitting or pressing against the body which can provide enough acceleration for the sensor/sensors to send signals to the control unit. The control unit then sends an activation signal if the signal from the sensors is sufficiently high or has sufficient duration.
Work around the SRS steering wheel module
Where applicable, work done on the steering wheel, steering shaft or steering gear must be in accordance with the methods given in the SRS service hand book.
Read the appropriate sections! The contact reel in the steering shaft will be damaged if the steering wheel is turned more than three times in either direction!
