Control module
The main role of the VGLA (Volvo Guard and Locking Alarm system) is to control and monitor the locking and alarm system in the car. The control module is located in the center under the dashboard in front of the gear selector lever.
The following components are connected to the control module to enable it to carry out its tasks:
- switches at the doors, hood and cargo compartment
- motors in the doors, tailgate/trunk lid and for the fuel tank filler cap
- glass breakage sensors and ultrasonic sound units
- receiver for the remote control
- vehicle tilt sensor.
Some of these accessories are market dependent.
The functions of the system are:
- locking and unlocking doors and the tailgate/trunk lid
- alarm
- interior lighting
- child safety locks
- diagnostic functions.
The system can be armed and disarmed using the key or the remote control, depending on the configuration. There are three different versions of the control module. The versions, the accessories installed and the functions which must be programmed are market dependent.
The appearance of the remote control depends on the market. It is available with additional functions such tailgate/trunk lid unlocking and a PANIC button. From model year 2003 inclusive the key is integrated in the remote control.
The VGLA control module also controls the interior lighting. It lights when the alarm is disarmed, if a door is opened or if the alarm is triggered.
The VGLA control module works together with the control module for the immobilizer and the Supplemental Restraint System Module (SRS) to reset and disarm the alarm and to unlock the doors in the event of a collision.
There are diagnostics for the control module. Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are stored in the control module and can be read off using VIDA.
Terminology
The terms below are used in the information about VGLA to describe the status of the system:
- Armed: the vehicle is locked and the sensors can trigger the alarm
- Disarmed: the vehicle is unlocked and no sensors are active
- Triggered: the turn signal lamps flash and the siren sounds
- Re-armed: the alarm has been armed and triggered. It has automatically returned to armed mode.
Signals
The table below summarizes the input signals to and output signals from the VGLA control module. The illustration below displays the same information with the Volvo component designations.
