S40/V40 are equipped with ABS, Bosch version 5.3.1 as standard.
The car has four brake discs. The discs on the front wheels are ventilated. The car has 15" Lucas brakes on the front wheels and 14" on the rear wheels.
The system has a 9" vacuum brake booster and a master cylinder of the tandem type. The brake fluid reservoir has a pipe to the clutch cylinder. There is no extra reservoir or warning lamp for the clutch. The warning lamp for the brake fluid lights up if the brake fluid level drops to a level where the brake function is affected. The float which indicates the low fluid level is suspended in the brake fluid reservoir.
The S40/V40 model has a diagonal split brake system. The primary circuit operates the right front and left rear wheels. The secondary circuit operates the left front and right rear wheels.
The front and rear wheels all have sliding calipers.
The parking brake mechanism for the rear wheels is integrated into the brake caliper.
The switch for the parking brake warning lamp is located on the parking brake lever in the center console.
The pressure to the rear brakes is reduced using a relief valve, located in the brakes pipes.
The ABS-system is a system with 4 channels, but the rear wheels are set for"select low". Each wheel has its own speed sensor. The system has a warning lamp on the dashboard.
