Programming And Replacing The Control Module
Programming and replacing the control module
General
It is not possible to download new software into the VGLA control module.
To program the different control module functions, the control module must first be unlocked using the PIN code for each function. VIDA automatically unlocks the control module. The PIN codes are then retrieved directly from the Volvo Central Database. Because of the unique PIN codes, the VGLA control module cannot be moved between cars.
Programming a new control module
When programming a new VGLA control module, only the unique PIN codes intended for unlocking are downloaded first. The various lock and alarm functions and the remote controls are then programmed. All settings are stored in the control module but not in the Volvo central database. This means that the settings must be reprogrammed when the hardware is replaced.
For information about programmable lock and alarm settings, see Description of the programmed values Description Of The Programmed Values.
All programmed lock and alarm functions can be modified later.
Programming remote controls
Remote controls can be added to or removed from cars which already have a remote control function. A maximum of 3 remote controls can be programmed into the VGLA control module. When programming a remote control, the control module identifies the relevant remote control and stores it in the control module memory. More remote controls can be added after the initial programming. The erase function is used when the customer wishes to prevent one or more remote controls from being used for the lock and alarm system in the car. The remote controls may have been stolen and could be traced back to the vehicle. During programming, when the control module receives a code from one of the remaining remote controls, all previous remote codes are erased from the control module. Only the code from the last used remote control is stored. The remaining remote controls must be programmed into the control module again. It is important therefore that the customer takes all the remote controls to the dealer.
Note! From model year 2003 inclusive the remote control is integrated with the key (does not apply to USA/Canada). During the introduction of the remote control, a relay will be installed for a transitional period in model year 2003 cars. This relay prevents the lock and alarm system from unintentionally switching mode when the key is removed from the ignition switch. This is done by disconnecting the power supply to the receiver for the remote control when the driver's door is open. This means that on cars from model year 2003 onwards, the driver's door must be closed when programming new control modules.
Programming the remote control function
The remote control function can be programmed into the VGLA control module at a later date. The remote control function can only be added if the car has KCL or KCL + PCL lock types. See below for an explanation:
- KCL (Key Central Lock), key controlled central locking only
- PCL (Power Child Lock), extra lock motor for child-proof locking of the rear passenger doors.
Programming the alarm function
The Alarm function can be added to cars which already have a remote control function. This means that the car is equipped with an alarm.
