Airbag driver's side (SRS), replacing

Preparatory work

Removing the battery lead and important information




Position the steering wheel straight ahead.
Note the anti-theft code for the radio.
Switch off the ignition. Remove the key.

Note! The key must be removed to ensure that the ignition is not switched on by mistake.

Disconnect the battery negative lead.

Warning! The SRS (supplemental restraint system) is active for a certain time after the power is cut. Therefore wait 3 minutes before starting work.

Warning! Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuring instrument to take readings on a disconnected, non-deployed pyrotechnical SRS component. There is a risk of the seat belt tensioner deploying.

Warning! A pyrotechnical SRS component must never be unscrewed, repaired or transferred to another vehicle.

This method consists of:
- Alternative (1): Airbag driver's side (SRS), replacing (chassis number 920000 - 977442)
- Alternative (2): Airbag driver's side (SRS), replacing (chassis number 977443 -).

Removing the driver's airbag (SRS)




Remove the driver's airbag (SRS) from the steering wheel. Insert a Torx screwdriver under the vertical spoke.
Press the driver's airbag (SRS) into place using the other hand. At the same time press in the spring clip properly on the inside. Use a Torx screwdriver so that the driver's airbag (SRS) detaches.
Carefully pull out the driver's airbag (SRS).

Hint: Use a 5 mm diameter Torx screwdriver which is at least 60 mm long.

Note! Do not use tools to disconnect the connector.

Turn the driver's airbag (SRS) up.

Carefully remove:
- the connectors (2). First press in the snap ring sides (3)
- the connector for the horn (4)
- the driver's airbag (SRS). Place to one side.

Note! The driver's airbag (SRS) must be stored in a safe place with the connector side (reverse) facing down. The driver's airbag (SRS) must not be covered or placed upside down.

Connecting the driver's airbag (SRS)









Caution! Ensure that the wiring is not trapped or damaged during installation.

1.Position the driver's airbag (SRS) as illustrated.
Check that the wiring is not twisted.

Connect:
- the 2 connectors (2) in the driver's airbag (SRS). Check that they are properly secured
- the connector for the horn (4).
2.Check that the 3 return springs for the horn (1) are on the driver's airbag (SRS).
Turn the driver's airbag (SRS) up 120° so that the connectors point towards the front of the steering wheel.
3.Carefully turn the driver's airbag (SRS) approximately 1 1/2 turn clockwise.

Installing driver's airbag (SRS)





Caution! Ensure that the wiring is not trapped, twisted or damaged during installation.

Reinstall the driver's airbag (SRS) in the steering wheel. Install the locking pins (4) on the driver's airbag (SRS) opposite the corresponding hole in the steering wheel mounting plate.
Press the center of the lock pins so that the (5) lock springs in the hole engage in the studs. Ensure that no wiring is trapped.

Check that:
- the steering wheel can be turned easily
- the steering wheel lock functions correctly
- the driver's airbag (SRS) is secure.

Finishing





Note! Ensure that nobody is in the vehicle when the battery is connected.

Turn the ignition key to position II.
Connect the battery negative lead.
Specify the anti-theft code for the radio.
Set the clock.
Check that the horn functions.
Check that the SRS warning lamp lights and goes out after approximately 10 seconds.

Removing the driver's airbag (SRS)




Remove the driver's airbag (SRS) from the steering wheel. Insert a Torx screwdriver under the vertical spoke.
Press the driver's airbag (SRS) into place using the other hand. At the same time press in the spring clip properly on the inside. Use a Torx screwdriver so that the driver's airbag (SRS) detaches.
Carefully pull out the driver's airbag (SRS).

Hint: Use a 5 mm diameter Torx screwdriver which is at least 60 mm long.

Note! Do not use tools to disconnect the connector.

Turn the driver's airbag (SRS) up.
Unhook the rubber stops (1) from the mounting plate.

Carefully remove:
- the connectors (2). Press in the catches (3) on the sides
- the connector for the horn (4)
- the driver's airbag (SRS). Place to one side.

Note! The driver's airbag (SRS) must be safely stored with the connector side (reverse) facing down. The driver's airbag (SRS) must not be covered or placed upside down.

Connecting the driver's airbag (SRS)





Note! Ensure that the wiring is not trapped or damaged during installation.

Position the driver's airbag (SRS) as illustrated.

Connect:
- the 2 connectors (2) in the driver's airbag (SRS). Check that they are properly secured
- the connector for the horn (4).
Check that the 3 return springs for the horn are on the driver's airbag (SRS).
Hook the rubber stops (1) over the cable on the mounting plate.

Note! Ensure that the rubber stops secure the cable.

Installing driver's airbag (SRS)





Note! Ensure that the wiring is not trapped, twisted or damaged during installation.

Reinstall the driver's airbag (SRS) in the steering wheel. Install the locking pins (4) on the driver's airbag (SRS) opposite the corresponding hole in the steering wheel mounting plate.
Press the center of the lock pins so that the (5) lock springs in the hole engage in the studs. Ensure that no wiring is trapped.

Check that:
- the steering wheel can be turned easily
- the steering wheel lock functions correctly
- the driver's airbag (SRS) is secure.

Finishing





Note! Ensure that nobody is in the vehicle when the battery is connected.

Turn the ignition key to position II.
Connect the battery negative lead.
Specify the anti-theft code for the radio.
Set the clock.
Check that the horn functions.
Check that the SRS warning lamp lights and goes out after approximately 10 seconds.
