Checking The Compressor Clutch
Checking the compressor clutch
Checking for a short-circuit
- Start the engine
- Wait at least 10 seconds for the climate control module to carry out its diagnostics
- Start the blower fan
- Affect the air conditioning (A/C) switch on the climate control module so that A/C is requested (the green LED lights).
Note! The normal conditions for engagement of air conditioning (A/C) must have been met.
- Check that the compressor clutch activates. The fault is no linger present if the function is OK.
Hint: There is a ticking noise when the clutch activates.
Is the function OK?
Yes - FAULT FOUND
No - Checking the fuse, cable
-------------------------------------------------
Checking the fuse, cable
- Check the fuse for the circuit for contact resistance and oxidation. Check that the fuse is not defective. See the cover for the integrated relay/fusebox in the engine compartment for locations
- Check the connections to the relay for the air conditioning (A/C) compressor for contact resistance and oxidation. See the cover for the integrated relay/fusebox in the engine compartment for locations
- Check the cable between the relevant fuses in the integrated relay/fusebox in the engine compartment and air conditioning (A/C) compressor terminals #1 and #3. Check for an open-circuit and a short-circuit to ground.
Hint: The voltage at terminals #1 and #3 must be approximately the same as battery voltage, measured in relation to power ground.
- Check the cable between terminal #2 on the relay for the air conditioning (A/C) compressor and the engine control module (ECM). Check for contact resistance and oxidation, an open-circuit and a short-circuit to supply voltage.
Hint: The voltage at terminal #2 must be approximately the same as battery voltage when the relay for the air conditioning (A/C) compressor is not activated by the engine control module (ECM).
Remedy as necessary.

Was a fault detected?
Yes - Verification
No - Checking components
-------------------------------------------------
Checking components
- Bridge across terminals #3 and #5 in the relay base for the air conditioning (A/C) compressor. See the cover for the integrated relay/fusebox in the engine compartment for locations
- Check that the compressor clutch engages. The relay for the air conditioning (A/C) compressor is defective if the compressor clutch activates.
Hint: There is a ticking noise when the clutch activates.
Does the compressor clutch activate?
Yes - Replacing the component
No - Checking the connector, component and cable
-------------------------------------------------
Checking the connector, component and cable
- Check the connector on the compressor clutch. Check for contact resistance and oxidation
- Check the cable between terminal #5 on the relay for the air conditioning (A/C) compressor and the compressor clutch. Check for contact resistance and oxidation, an open-circuit and a short-circuit to ground. See the cover for the integrated relay/fusebox in the engine compartment for locations
- Check that the ground terminal for the compressor clutch is OK
- Check the clutch.
Remedy as necessary.

Was a fault detected?
Yes - Verification
No - Fault-tracing information
-------------------------------------------------
Replacing the component
- Ignition off
- Replace the relay for the air conditioning (A/C) compressor. See the cover for the integrated relay/fusebox in the engine compartment for locations.
Continue - Verification
-------------------------------------------------
Verification
Hint: After carrying out the repair, check that the fault has been remedied.
- Ignition off
- Reconnect the connectors, reinstall components etc. Wait at least 10 seconds for the climate control module to carry out its diagnostics
- Affect the air conditioning (A/C) switch on the climate control module so that A/C is requested (the green LED lights).
Note! The normal conditions for engagement of air conditioning (A/C) must have been met.
- Check that the compressor clutch activates. The fault has been remedied if the function is OK.
Hint: There is a ticking noise when the clutch activates.
Is the function OK?
Yes - FAULT FOUND
No - Fault-tracing information

Information
Fault-tracing information
The fault should have been detected and remedied. As this is not the case fault-tracing has failed.
Exit fault-tracing for this diagnostic trouble code (DTC) or make another attempt.
Do you want to exit fault-tracing?
Yes - Exit fault-tracing
No - Attempt New Test
