Checking the shift-lock function
- Gear selector in position P
- Ignition on
- Brake pedal depressed.
Check that the gear selector can be moved from position P to the other positions.
When the ignition is off or the if brake pedal is released, the gear selector must be locked in position P.
Is the shift-lock function OK?
Yes - No Fault Found
No - Checking the cable and component

- Ignition off.
Check the cable between fuse 7 (in the integrated relay / fusebox in the passenger compartment) and stop lamp switch terminal #4. Check for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.
Check the stop lamp switch. Connect an ohmmeter between stop lamp switch terminals #4 and #3.
The ohmmeter should read infinite resistance with the brake pedal released and approximately 0 ohms with the pedal pressed down.
Check the cable between stop lamp switch terminal #3 and shift-lock solenoid connector terminal #1. Check for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault. Check for a short-circuit to supply voltage according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.
Check the ground lead between shift-lock solenoid terminal #2 and the ground terminal. Check for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.
Check the shift-lock solenoid. With the ignition in the drive position, press the brake and check that the solenoid releases the lock. Check that the lock engages again when the brake pedal is released.
Remedy as necessary.
