Diagnostic functions Audio HU1205 (audio module)
General
The audio unit is not connected to the data link connector (DLC) in the car.
All diagnostics and other settings are directly controlled by menus in the display on Audio HU1205. Diagnostic functions are activated using the buttons (dark in the illustration to the left) on the front panel.
Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs)
6 diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) can be stored in audio unit HU 1205. The audio system / navigation system can diagnose both internal and external faults. The following diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) can be stored: AUM-1000 Memory control, AUM-2000 CD servo, AUM-2100 CD unit, AUM-3000 GPS receiver, AUM-3100 GPS antenna and AUM-6000 Audio unit. The diagnostic menu must be activated as described below in order to read diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), to carry out other tests and to change settings.
Diagnostic menu
To activate the diagnostic menu:
- Ensure that the radio code and a map CD are in the audio unit
- Ignition off
- Ignition on. Wait until the graphic image with the text "Volvo" is displayed
- Press RTN, followed by ENT, then RTN. Wait approximately 5 seconds. The diagnostic menu should then be displayed.
Note! The amount of time between each button being pressed must not exceed 3 seconds ([RTN] maximum 3 seconds [ENT] maximum 3 seconds [RTN]). Try again if the diagnostic menu is not displayed after the buttons have been pressed as described above.
Main Menu
The options in the diagnostic menu should now be displayed.
Note! All texts in the diagnostic menu are in English.
Use the navigator on the front panel on the audio unit to select the desired command (the highlighted field) from the diagnostic menu (1-6). Then press [ENT] to confirm the selection.
Note! To activate command 4. Adjust and 5. System, certain Audio HU1205 units require that the buttons are pressed in in the sequence [RTN] followed by [ENT] within 1 second.
The following is displayed in the top right of the diagnostic menu:
- TB 0223 36: Shows the software version in the audio unit. The software version may vary between different audio units
- AT: OK:Indicates that the radio code (Anti-Theft) has been correctly entered. If " -" is displayed, the radio code has not been entered.

1. Display
The following is available from the Display menu:
- Color bar
- Hatching
- Gray scale
- Button of remo-con
- Color screen.
1.1 Color bar
Color bars are displayed vertically through the entire display. Press [ENT] to activate the function. Press [ RTN] to return to the diagnostic menu. The colors shown should be white, yellow, turquoise, violet, red, blue and black. There is a fault in the audio unit if any color is different.
1.2 Hatching
Hatching is shown through the entire display. Press [ ENT] to activate the function. Press [RTN ] to return to the diagnostic menu. The lines must be straight, sharp and centered. There is a fault in the audio unit if the lines are not straight, sharp or centered.
1.3 Grey scale
Grey scale bars are displayed vertically through the entire display. Press [ENT] to activate the function. Press [ RTN] to return to the diagnostic menu.
The range of the gray scale bars should be from white, through light gray and dark gray, and finally to black. There is a fault in the audio unit if the gray scale bars are not correct.
1.4 Button of remo-con
The status of the navigator, ENT and RTN buttons on the audio unit front panel as well as the (optional) remote control buttons can be checked from here. Press [ENT] to activate the function.
"OFF" is displayed until the actual button is pressed in. The status then changes to "ON". The status returns to "OFF" when the button is released. If the status does not return to "OFF", the button is catching, has stuck in or there is another fault in the audio unit or remote control (optional).
Press [RTN] twice to return to the diagnostic menu.
1.5 Color screen
Will display one color at a time in the display. The order the colors are displayed in is black, red, green and blue. Press [ ENT ] to activate the function and to change the color.
Press [RTN] to return to the diagnostic menu. There is a fault in the audio unit if the colors are not clear or as listed above.
2. Self-Diagnosis
The following is available from the Self-diagnosis menu:
- Circuit check
- GPS time setting
- Test tone
- GPS information.
2.1 Circuit check
Automatically starts an internal and external self-diagnostic (fault-tracing) in the audio unit.
Press [ENT] to activate the function.
For parameter a-c:
(a) Displays the vehicle speed signal from the combined instrument panel. Must display "00000" when the car is stationary. The value must then increase and decrease with speed as appropriate. There is a fault in the signal from the combined instrument panel or a fault in the audio unit if 00000 is not displayed when the car is stationary, or if the value does not increase or decrease with the vehicle speed.
(b) Displays the gyro signal from the integrated yaw rate sensor (detects the sideways movement of the car). The value should be between 490-520 when the car is stationary. The value must change when the car turns in any direction during the test drive. There is a fault in the audio unit if the value does not change.
(c) Displays the status of the signal from the back-up (reversing) lamp switch. When the engine is running and back-up (reverse) gear is not selected, the status must be displayed as: "Not R" (Not Reverse). When the engine is running and back-up (reverse) gear is selected, the status must be displayed as: "R" (reverse). There is a fault with the back-up lamp circuit or a fault in the audio unit if this is not the case.
For parameters d-h:
"OK" will be displayed if the self-diagnostic does not detect any faults in the units (d-h). "NG" (Not Good) will be displayed for the relevant unit if a fault is registered. (d-h). This means that there is a fault in the audio unit.
Note! If "NG (Not Good) is displayed parameter for (f), there is a fault in the circuit for the GPS antenna. The fault may also be in the audio unit. Press [RTN] to return to the diagnostic menu.If there is no map CD (GPS information) in the CD player, "-" will appear in the display for the CD drive. A map CD must be in the CD player to carry out diagnostics on the CD drive.
2.2 GPS time setting
Shows the current date and clock reading. The date and time is adjusted automatically when there is communication with at least 3 GPS satellites.
The date and time can also be changed manually.
Press [ENT] to activate the function.
When modifying the setting, use the right and left arrows on the navigator to move to the correct digits. Use the up and down arrows to select the time.
Press [RTN] to confirm the settings and return to the diagnostic menu.
Note! The setting is adjusted automatically when there is communication with at least 3 GPS satellites.
2.3 Test tone
The voice guidance channel can be tested here.
Press [ENT] to activate the function. Use the navigator to select the desired luminance, between 1 and 5. Then press [ ENT] after selecting the luminance. There should then be a short sound signal from the loudspeaker.
Press [RTN] to return to the diagnostic menu.
There is a fault in the loudspeaker circuit in the audio unit if there is no sound.
2.4 GPS information
Provides data about the current position of the car, as well as information about the number of GPS satellites that the audio unit is in communication with at present (updated every second) and other GPS information.
Press [ENT] to activate the function. Use the navigator to scroll up and down in the display.
- N: North
- 007F1920: Displays a hexadecimal value which represents the actual altitude. The audio unit uses this value when calculating the position
- 34°44'00'': Displays the present latitude.
- E: East
- 036F552B: Displays a hexadecimal value which represents the actual longitude. The audio unit uses this value when calculating the position
- 135°21'00'': Displays the present longitude.
Time: Displays a hexadecimal value which represents the present clock reading and date. The audio unit uses this value when calculating the position.
Name: Displays a hexadecimal value which represents the name of those GPS satellites that the audio unit is using to calculate the position.
Num: Uses a hexadecimal value which represents a certain number of GPS satellites. The audio unit uses this value when calculating the position.
PDOP: Displays a hexadecimal value which represents the calculation value. The audio unit uses this value when calculating the position.
Height: Displays the calculated height in meters to a particular GPS satellite. This value is used by the audio unit to calculate the position.
Status: Displays a hexadecimal value which represents status information. The audio unit uses this value when calculating the position.
1-8: Displays the number of GPS satellites the audio unit can be in contact with. The number OK displayed indicates the number of GPS satellites that the audio unit is presently in contact with (the illustration shows that the audio unit is in contact with only two GPS satellites). Press [ RTN] to return to the diagnostic menu.
Note! This requires that the audio unit is in contact with at least three different GPS satellites in order for the correct position to be calculated and displayed on the map.The audio unit can be in contact with a maximum of 8 different GPS satellites.
3. RTI Diag
Gives information if a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored in the audio unit. Press [ENT] to activate the function. If there is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC), the number and name of the DTC will be displayed. Nothing is displayed if there is no diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
Press [ENT] to erase any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) or [RTN] to return to the diagnostic menu.
Note! You will only be asked if you want to erase diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) if DTCs are stored.
Use the navigator to select whether to erase diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) or not. Then press [ENT] to confirm the selection. Press [ RTN] to return to the diagnostic menu.
4. Adjust
The following is available from the Adjust menu:
- In a city
- Stored locations
- Lat. & Lon.
Note! When selecting "In a city" or "Stored locations", leave the diagnostic menu and go to the standard menus in the navigation system. See the user manual for further information about these options. It is not then possible to scroll back to the diagnostic menu."Stored locations" can only be selected if a destination has been stored previously.
4.3 Lat. & Lon
Displays the latitude and longitude of the present location.
Press [ENT] to activate the function. The latitude and longitude are adjusted automatically when a GPS signal is received.
These settings can be modified manually. Use the right and left arrows on the navigator to move to the correct digits. Use the up and down arrows to select the location. Press [ ENT] to confirm the change and exit the diagnostic functions.
Press [RTN] to scroll back to the Adjust sub-menu.
Note! The setting is adjusted automatically when there is communication with at least 3 GPS satellites.
5. System
Displays the status of the security settings (whether or not the navigation settings can be modified when the car is moving).
Press [RTN] followed by [ENT] within one second to activate the function.
For road safety reasons, the factory default setting is "ON". This prevents modification of certain navigation settings from being made when the car is moving. This status can be changed to "OFF". In this status the navigation settings can "always" be modified.
Use the navigator to select the setting. Then press [ENT] to confirm the selection and return to the diagnostic menu. To make other changes, press [RTN] to return to the diagnostic menu.
Note! When the setting is Operation restriction "ON", the status of the signal from the back-up (reversing) lamp switch determines whether all navigation settings can be modified or not. To be able to modify all navigation settings, the status in 2.1 Circuit check parameter must display "R" (reverse).
6. End
Exit / switch of the audio unit.
Press [ENT] to activate the function.
