Trailing Arm: Service and Repair






Replacing the trailing arm

Special tools:
951 2834 Torque socket 21mm S/V40 951 2834 Torque Socket 21mm

Removal

Removing the rear wheels




Raise the car.
Remove the hub cap.
Remove the wheel nuts and the wheel.

Removing brake calipers





Remove:
- the clamp for the parking brake cable from the trailing arm
- the clamp and brake hose from the mounting
- the 2 mounting screws
- the brake caliper. Hang it up.

Caution! Do not depress the brake pedal while the brake caliper is removed.

Removing components from the trailing arm





remove:
- the hub cap
- the center nut A
- the whole hub and the brake disc
- the 4 screws B
- the protective panel, support and ABS sensor
- the ABS line from the trailing arm.

Removing the trailing arm




Support the lower control arm.

Remove:
- the 2 screws C for the mounting for the upper and lower control arm
- the control arm screws (x2) B for toe-in adjustment from the trailing arm
- the screw A on the front mounting for the trailing arm
- the trailing arm.

Installation

Installing the trailing arm





Install:
- the trailing arm in the front mounting using screw A
- the control arm for toe-in adjustment in the trailing arm using the 2 screws B
- the upper and lower control arms on the trailing arm using the 2 screws C.
Tighten all the screws and nuts to contact

Installing components on the trailing arm





Caution! Check that the wheel bearing has not separated and that the circlip holding the inner bearing ring is in position. The hub must be replaced if the bearing is faulty.

Install:
- the ABS line on the trailing arm
- the support, ABS sensor and protection plate
- the 4 screws B. Tighten to 55 Nm
- the whole hub and the brake disc
- the center nut A. Tighten to 120 Nm and 30°
- the hub cap.

Installing the brake caliper





Install:
- the brake caliper on the support
- the 2 mounting screws. Tighten to 55 Nm
- the brake hose and clamp on the trailing arm
- the parking brake cable and clamp on the trailing arm.

Installing the rear wheel




Check that the brake disc and wheel rim mating surfaces are clean.
Lubricate the hub center guide using rustproofing agent P/N 1161038-3.
Install the wheel. Tighten the nuts loosely.
Then tighten crosswise to 110 Nm.
When tightening with an impact wrench, torque socket 951 2834 Torque socket 21mm S/V40 951 2834 Torque Socket 21mm must be used.

Caution! The correct tightening torques and crosswise tightening for the nuts are essential to avoid stresses in the brake disc.

Install the hub cap.

Torque tightening





Caution! Before torque tightening, the car must be on the ground and bounced a few times.

Tighten:
- screw A for the front mounting. Tighten to 90 Nm
- screw B for the toe-in adjustment control arm in the trailing arm. Tighten to 35 Nm
- the screws C for the upper and lower control arms on the trailing arm. Tighten to 90 Nm.

Checking the ABS system
Test drive the car.
Check that the ABS warning light is not lit.
