Brakes - Rear Brake Groaning Noise

Rear Brake Noise / Rear Brake Pad Replacement

DESCRIPTION:
Under certain conditions while driving in reverse and applying the brakes a groaning noise may be heard from the rear brakes. A new rear brake pad and a greased retainer have been introduced in production and are now available as a service solution. If a customer should complain of this noise from the rear brakes the vehicle should be repaired as follows.
SERVICE:
Remove the brake pads 1.
Remove:
- the spring (3)
- the protective caps (1)
- the locating pins (2). Use a 7 mm hex socket
- the brake caliper. Hang it up to prevent damage.
- the brake pads
Note!
Do not depress the brake pedal while the brake pads are removed.
Cleaning the brake caliper 2.
Clean and check the brake caliper and the dust cover.
Clean and check the brake pad mating surfaces in the brake caliper and caliper holder.
Install brake pads 3.
Press the piston back into the cylinder on the
brake caliper. Use: The press tool 9995782
with the Key 9997091.
Check that the dust boot is correctly positioned.
Apply grease PN 1161688 to contact point as illustrated. 4.
Install the new brake pads.
Note!
The brake pad with the spring must be placed against the brake caliper piston.
Install the brake caliper 4.
Install:
- the brake caliper
- the locating pins (2). Tighten to 30 Nm (22 ft lbs)
Lubricate the locating pins using silicone
grease.
Note! Check the rubber sleeves of the locating pins. Replace if necessary.
Install:
- the protective caps (1)
- the spring (3).

Adjusting the parking brake, see: VIDA / VADIS
Depress the brake pedal a few times. Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir. Top up if necessary.
