NO: 39-48

DATE: 5-6-2005

MODEL: New S40 / V50

M.YEAR: 04.5/05

SUBJECT:
SW upgrade to solve No sound, frozen radio display,
and PI seek message

REFERENCE: VADIS / VIDA repair instruction

DESCRIPTION:

Typical symptom for the no sound concern caused by software is, that on the 1CM display everything is shown as if the system is working (volume control, AM/FM/CD change, frequency change etc.) but, there is no sound coming from the loudspeakers. This symptom is usually noticed after an engine start.

Some additional symptoms may be;

^ Information on the 1CM display seems to be frozen

^ ICM display may be blank

^ Using Auto Store function may result in "hang-up"

^ After switching radio on, or when switching from CD to FM, the radio may intermittently not work.

^ Turning radio Off and On or restarting the engine will cause the radio to function normally again

^ Message "PI seek - to cancel - press exit" appears on screen too frequent when using FM station presets.

SERVICE:
If any of the symptoms above are reported perform the following;

- ICM upgrade p/n 30667220

- Total MOST upgrade p/n 30667242

Please note that when performing a Total MOST upgrade the message in VIDA or VADIS SW manager / details <"In valid, This hardware pad already contains the latest SW" will not appear if the MOST nodes are already up to latest SW status.

When upgrades are performed on individual MOST nodes the warning message will appear if the individual node is already up to latest SW status

Important regarding the PI seek message!

After the upgrade is downloaded ensure that the AF (alternate frequency) box is not checked by the following method Turn radio on , select FM radio function then " FM menu" I "Advanced radio settings" / AF ... make sure the box does not have an "X" in it then press the "exit" button

Although "AF is off by default, the customer may have selected the function without realizing it, thus introducing the "PI seek" scenario.

Background information on PI seek and RDS (Radio Data System)

Many radio stations across North America are now broadcasting RDS signals. RDS signals include various information ,including : PTY program type, (Rock, Classical, Talk ... News or traffic updates and Alternative Frequency AF . The intent of Alternative Frequency (AF) within RDS is to make a particular network of stations available for listening over long distances of travel. For example: a customer will be able to listen to WXYZ while traveling down the entire east coast. WXYZ would be broadcast on different frequencies down the coast. However, this system is not yet widely implemented in the United States.

When a frequency which is broadcasting RDS data is stored as a preset, the RDS information is also memorized; within this stored data is an Alternative Frequency list. If there is no information supplied by the broadcaster in the Alternative Frequency list and the stored station is out range, the message "PI seek" will be displayed. This is the radio's normal response when it cannot find an alternative frequency if the AF function is turned on.
