Rear Bumper: Service and Repair
Bumper rear, replacing
Note! The illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and/or models. Some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.
Removal
Removing rear bumper
Open the tailgate.
Remove:
- the rear floor hatch
- the front floor hatch
- the battery. See: Battery, replacing Battery, Replacing
- the cover and the soundproofing on the right-hand side. See: Base plate and toolbox Base Plate and Toolbox. Alternatively the subwoofer. See: Subwoofer and amplifier for the subwoofer Subwoofer and Amplifier For the Subwoofer
- the 4 soundproofing sections (1) and the 4 nuts. Use a 13 mm long socket.
Hint: Use butyl tape to secure the nuts in the socket. Otherwise the nuts are easy to lose.
Remove:
- the connector (2) for the antenna amplifier. Alternatively remove the screw (3). Then remove the bracket
- the 4 connectors for the parking assistance sensors if applicable.
Remove the rivets, 1 per side.
Slacken off the screws (5), 1 on each side, until the slide mounting releases from the bumper cover.
Hint: Press the screw so that the screw head bottoms out.
Pull the bumper backwards while pulling both the sides outwards so that the edge releases from the side bracket.
Note! Two people are required for this task.
Transferring components
Transferring components
Transfer:
- the cover over the towing eyelet
- weatherstrip Pull it off.
Fold up the striker plates, 1 per side.
Release the 13 hooks.
Remove and separate the rear section and energy absorber (foam/damper).
Transferring the rear protective panel
Removal
Note! The rear section must be removed before the protective panel can be replaced.
Remove the 4 rivets.
Release the 10 hooks (4)
Remove the protective panel.
Installation
Note! Use an installation tool and rivets with spacers. See VIDA Replacement Parts Information.
Hook the protective panel on to the casing.
Install the 4 rivets.
Transferring the side mounting brackets
Remove:
- the rivets, 4 per bracket.
- the screws, 5 per bracket.
Transferring the antenna
Transfer the antenna. See: Antenna bumper rear, replacing Antenna Bumper Rear, Replacing.
Installation
Installing the rear bumper
Note! For tightening torques, see applicable specifications.
Install:
- the energy absorber (damper/foam) for the rear section
- the bumper on the bodywork.
Guide the lugs (6) for the bumper into the grooves (7) on the slide mounting. Press at the top so that the lugs engage.
Hint: This operation is easier with two people.
Install the 4 M8 nuts. Tighten.
Hint: Use butyl tape to secure the nuts in the socket. Otherwise the nuts are easy to lose.
Install:
- the 4 x sound proofing sections in the cargo compartment
- the 4 connectors for the parking assistance sensors if applicable
- the connector for the antenna
- the screw, 1 per side, at the top of the casing by the wheel arch.
Caution! Do not use rivets during installation.
Install:
- the spring nut, 1 on each side.
- the screw, 1 on each side. Tighten.
- the cover and the soundproofing on the right-hand side. See: Base plate and toolbox Base Plate and Toolbox. Alternatively the subwoofer. See: Subwoofer and amplifier for the subwoofer Subwoofer and Amplifier For the Subwoofer
- the connector for the antenna amplifier. Alternatively install the screw and tighten
- the battery. See: Battery, replacing Battery, Replacing
- the front floor hatch
- the rear floor hatch.
Close the tailgate.
