Status check

Reading off the status of the diagnostic trouble code (DTC)

Engine control module (ECM)

Reading off the status of the diagnostic trouble code (DTC):
Note! When reading off the DTC status, other stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and their status will also be listed.

- Start the engine. Let it idle for at least 15 seconds.
- Read off the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) status. Check the status of the relevant diagnostic trouble code (DTC).

Was the status of the relevant diagnostic trouble code (DTC) permanent?

Yes - PERMANENT

No - INTERMITTENT

------------------------

PERMANENT - Checking the wiring

INTERMITTENT - Intermittent fault

-------------------------------------------------

Checking the wiring
Check the resistance between connector terminal #1 and terminal #2 on the camshaft reset valve. The resistance must be approximately 3.7 ohms.
Check the signal cable between engine control module (ECM) terminal #A12 and connector terminal #2 (on the camshaft reset valve). Check for a short-circuit to ground.
Remedy as necessary.

Other information
- Connecting the breakout box Connecting the Breakout Box
- Signal specification Signal Description / Specification
- Variable valve timing solenoid, replacing Removal and Replacement
- With the ignition on and the reset valve connector disconnected, the voltage at connector terminal #1 must be approximately Ubat and at connector terminal #2 it must be a pulse modulated signal with a peak voltage of approximately Ubat and with a frequency of approximately 250 Hz
- Checking wiring and terminals Checking Wiring And Terminals

Intermittent fault

Signal too low. Intermittent fault

Checking wiring and connectors
Check the signal cable between engine control module (ECM) terminal #A12 and connector terminal #2 (on the camshaft reset valve). Check for an intermittent short-circuit to ground according to Checking wiring and terminals. Intermittent faults Checking Wiring and Terminals. Intermittent Faults.
Check power supply cablenbsp;terminal #5 and connector terminal #1 (on the camshaft reset valve). Check for an intermittent short-circuit to ground according to Checking wiring and terminals. Intermittent faults Checking Wiring and Terminals. Intermittent Faults.

Other information:
- To connect the breakout box, see Connecting the breakout box Connecting the Breakout Box
- To access and replace the camshaft reset valve, see Variable valve timing solenoid, replacing Removal and Replacement
- With the ignition on and the reset valve connector disconnected, the voltage at connector #1 must be approximately Ubat and at connector terminal #2 it must be a pulse modulated signal with a peak voltage of approximately Ubat and with a frequency of approximately 250 Hz
- For information about signals, see Signal specification Signal Description / Specification.

Fault-tracing information

Information

Fault-tracing information
If the fault is intermittent, do not verify fault-tracing if the fault does not recur.
It is possible to view the information again, or leave fault-tracing for this diagnostic trouble code (DTC).

Do you want to view the information again?

Yes - Attempt New Test

No - Fault Found

Hint: After carrying out the repair, check that the fault has been remedied.

- Start the engine and run it to operating temperature and then let it run at idle speed
- Read off the angle of the camshaft (actual value) and the its desired angle (target value).
At idle speed with the engine at operating temperature, check that the camshaft shift angle (actual value) and the desired value correspond with an accuracy of approximately 8° CA. Rev the engine a few times and check again at idle speed that the values correspond.

Hint: If this check is carried out during a road test under load, the results will be clearer because camshaft control will be more active.

The difference between the values can be read off in the lower digital display.
