Recall - Windshield Wiper Arm Replacement

Recall 156 Windshield wiper arm, reduced performance

This TNN superseded the previous 36-156, dated 1-03-2007. Please update your files.

DESCRIPTION:

If the wiper arm is activated in extreme winter weather conditions and without lifting the wiper arm and cleaning the windshield prior to takeoff, the wiper arm might slip on its driveshaft, resulting in an inability to move the wipers from parking position.

Note!
The current replacement instructions in VIDA are incorrect and will be updated.





MATERIAL AND TOOLING

SERVICE METHOD:

1. Note!
The illustrations may contain some discrepancies, but the essential information is always correct.

2. Preparations

Make sure that the wiper motor is in park mode.

Switch off the ignition.

3. Remove the protective cover





Remove the protective covers.

Use L-hook 9512943.

4. Remove the wiper arm

Loosen the nuts; two turns only.





Use special tool 9814088 (puller) as shown to loosen the wiper arms from the shafts.

Remove the nuts and the wiper arms from the shafts.

5. Cleaning





Caution!
The splines of the driveshafts must be free from aluminum residue and dirt.





6. Caution!
The splines and threads of the driveshafts must be completely free from oil products.

Thoroughly wipe clean and dry.

7. Install the wiper arms

Transfer the wiper blades to the new wiper arms.

Position the new wiper arms onto the driveshafts.





Using new nuts. (P/N 985860) loosely screw the nuts in place. Ensure the wiper arm mount is perpendicular to the shaft as shown. Do not tighten the nut while the wiper arm is at an angle to the driveshaft.





8. Adjust the wiper arm to the correct position on the windshield. See illustration.

Driver's side:

The distance from the center of the wiper blade to the upper edge of the trim strip must be 3 in. (75 mm).

Passenger side:

The distance from the center of the wiper blade to the upper edge of the trim strip must be 3.5 in. (90 mm).

Caution!
Hold the wiper arms in position when tightening the nuts.

Tighten the nuts to 16.2 lb ft (22 Nm)

Angle torque 90°

Fit the protective covers.

If adjustment is necessary after checking function see note below

NOTE!!!
As described above when installing a "NEW" (never installed) wiper arm; torque to 16.2 lb ft (22 Nm) and then angle torque 90°.

As previously stated; For this recall new wiper arms are to be used! However if removing and reinstalling these arms for any reason at anytime thereafter; torque to 16.2 lb ft (22 Nm) but DO NOT ANGLE TORQUE a previously installed wiper arm!
