THIS DOCUMENT SUPERSEDES THE PREVIOUS RETAILER TECHNICAL JOURNAL 17498 DATED 11-30-2009. Additional fault tracing has been added and the chassis range has been changed. PLEASE UPDATE YOUR FILES.
DESCRIPTION:
When diagnosing a single knock from the front suspension that occurs when the driver brakes and turns at low speeds attention should be paid to the rear bushing in the front control arm where it connects to the front subframe.
PRODUCT MODIFICATION:
A new screw (note 10 in picture in the attachment) with wider waist was introduced in production during structure week 2008w40 (chassis 512712) to maintain a better connection.
A new control arm with a narrower bushing tube was introduced in production during structure week 2009w21 (see chassis range above). This bushing will minimize the play to only 0.5 mm (0.02") when using it with the new screw. The screw and the bushing are available as spare parts.
SERVICE:
First carry out basic analysis to understand where the noise is coming from. If possible use the Chassis Ear tool kit.
Only for cars before chassis number 532770:
If the noise is determined to be coming from the rear bushing of the front control arm replace the rear bushing (PN 31304040) the screw (PN 999403) and the nut (PN 985660) on both sides according to VIDA:
