A/T - Key Stuck in Ignition Switch
NO: 43-52DATE: 12-15-2006
MODEL: S80
MODEL YEAR: 2007
CHASSIS: < - 019600
SUBJECT: Key Can Not Be Removed From Ignition (SCU)
Description: A customer complaint of the key being stuck in the ignition on 2007 S80 cars up to chassis 019600 could be caused by a conflict between the shift cable and shifter housing. "Shift to Park to Remove Key" may be displayed in the DIM (Driver Information Module). Note that the transmission is in Park but the Park signal to the SCU (Start Control Unit) is missing due to the gear shift lever not being fully in position.
If the car is being driven in keyless mode, the customer complaint for this fault will be that they are unable to lock the car. "Shift to Park Position" may be displayed in the DIM and the key chime may be active when the door is open. A description of the KVM (Keyless Vehicle Module) can be found in VIDA Product Specification -> Design & Function -> Group 36.
Check that the ignition key has not been inserted in the SCU backwards (with the metal part first). If it has, remove it by gently pulling and wiggling it. If the key was found to be inserted backwards, then there is no need to perform the following procedure.
Service:
1. Adjust the driver's seat to the rear most position. Remove the trim panel from the side of the center console.
2. Disconnect the cable-end from the shifter by pressing in on the button in the center of the cable-end while pulling the cable-end away from the shifter. If necessary, use a hook to help pull the cable away.
3. Disconnect the cable from the shifter housing by sliding the white plastic collar toward the rear of the car while pulling the cable away from the shifter housing.
4. File the two corners of the cable end which face the shifter until they are rounded, as shown.
The rounded corners will prevent the cable end from getting stuck against the shifter housing. Re-install the cable.
5. There is a sensor arm which indicates the position of the shift lock solenoid to the GSM (Gear Selector Module). The arm is made up of two pieces; a white link and a black end. Check that the arm is corrected located in its track. Reposition it if it is dislodged.
6. There is one black plastic indicator on the arm and one on the GSM. Check that the arm is correctly adjusted by making sure the two indicators are aligned. If the marks are not aligned, adjust it by sliding the black end in or out along the white link.
7. Reinstall the side panel on the center console and readjust the driver's seat.
