Outside Rear View Mirror Wind Noise

AFFECTED VEHICLES

DESCRIPTION:

Customers may comment of a "wind-noise" from the outside rear view mirror, or A-pillar, or front side window area. We've found that this may be caused by the mirror housings and / or mounts. If it is confirmed that the noise is from the mirror area; follow the instructions shown below to address the issue.





MATERIAL

SERVICE:

Apply foam to the outside rear view mirror mounting area and tape to the mirror housings in order to seal gaps and potential air leaks. The mirror harness area will be sealed as well. For details of the method, see the instructions shown below.

NOTE:
This procedure should be performed to both sides.

Remove the mirror/cover

Per VIDA:

- Removal, replacement and installation
- 8 Body and interior
- 84 Exterior trim, glass, weatherstrips
- 846 outside mirrors
- Outside mirrors
- rear view mirror external / cover, external mirror

Modification





Cut a piece of tape (PN 30758982) approx 3/8ths x 10 and 5/8ths inches (1 x 27 cm) and apply inside the cover as indicated.





Remove the window moldings





Modifications to the outside of the door On the outside of the door Carefully remove the protruding tab on the sealing strips.





Use: Nitto tape kit (PN 31298046).





Fold out the sealing strips and apply the tape identified (2):

5/8ths x 2 3/8ths x 3/16ths inch (15 x 60 x 5 mm).





Install the sealing strip identified (1);

5/8ths x 5 7/8ths x 1/4 inch (15 x 150 x 7 mm)

Align:

Vertically against the existing lower edge between the inner and outer panel, so that it seals at the bottom.

Horizontally on the glass duct's rear edge.





Reinstall the window moldings





Place the piece of foam identified (3), with the front upper corner just below the recessed line in the weatherstrip.

NOTE:
This should not be visible outside the mirror housing when installed.





Apply Butyl tape (PN 1161784) to areas indicated.





Shape the foam block and slide under the edge of the sealing strips.

Per VIDA install:

- Removal, replacement and installation
- 8 Body and interior
- 84 Exterior trim, glass, weatherstrips
- 846 outside mirrors
- Outside mirrors
- rear view mirror external / cover, external mirror

Modifications to the inside of the door

On the inside of the door





Install the sealing strip identified (4); 5/8ths x 7 1/8ths x 1/8ths inch (15 x 180 x 3 mm)





Apply Butyl tape (PN 1161784) to the area indicated.

Reassembly

Install the door panel per VIDA:

- Removal, replacement and installation
- 8 Body and interior
- 85 Interior
- 851 Upholstery for wall/door, side, rear shelf, luggage rack
- Upholstery for wall/door, side, rear shelf, luggage rack
- Panel front door

NOTE:
It is important that all tape is covered by the mount of the door mirror and window guide channel / sealing strips.

Drive the vehicle and be sure the wind noise is eliminated.





In rare cases you may now find a slightly larger (unsightly) gap at the outside rear view mirror "foot" and the door.





If this is the case remove the front half of the tape as shown here.
