Coolant Temperature Sensor/Switch (For Computer): Service and Repair
Temperature sensor engine coolant, replacing

Removal
Removal of upper engine cover over cylinder 1, 3, 5 and 7 (bank 1)
Remove:
- the oil filler cap
- upper engine cover over cylinder 1, 3, 5 and 7 (bank 1) by pulling it straight up. Install the oil filler cap.
Removing the air cleaner intake pipe
Remove:
- the 2 screws
- the air cleaner intake pipe
- the expansion tank cap.
Removing protective plate
Note! There is a guide sleeve on the upper mounting for the plate. This must be lifted slightly so that the panel can be slid forward.
Remove the 6 screws.
Lift and slide the protective plate forward.
Remove the protective plate.
Draining coolant
Open the cock on the lower left edge of the radiator.
Drain the coolant into a clean receptacle.
Close the cock.
Installing the protective plate
Install:
- the protective plate
- the 6 screws; tighten.
Removing connectors
Remove:
- the connector of the injectors from the retainer
- the connector; bend aside
- the connector from the retainer; bend aside.
Removing the coolant temperature sensor
Remove:
- the connector from the temperature sensor
- the temperature sensor using 951 2885 Sleeve 951 2885 Sleeve.
Installation
Note! For tightening torques, see: Tightening torque, B8444S [1][2]Specifications.
Installing the coolant temperature sensor
Install:
- the temperature sensor using 951 2885 Sleeve 951 2885 Sleeve.
- the connector to the temperature sensor.
Installing connectors
Install:
- the connector to the injectors
- the connector of the injectors in the retainer
- the connector in the retainer.
Installing the air cleaner intake pipe
Install:
- the air cleaner intake pipe
- the 2 M6 screws; tighten.
Installation of upper engine cover over cylinder 1, 3, 5 and 7 (bank 1)
Remove the oil filler cap.
Install:
- upper engine cover over cylinder 1, 3, 5 and 7 (bank 1)
- the oil filler cap.
Check
Caution! Make sure the outlet hose of filling equipment is not blocked as this could damage the cooling system.
Fill with coolant using filling equipment 951 2957 Coolant Reservoir 951 2957 Coolant Reservoir and cover 951 2953 Cover 951 2953 Cover.
Check the oil level in the engine and transmission. Start the engine and allow it to warm to normal operating temperature. Check for leaks and proper function. Fill up fluids as necessary.
