Wiper and Washer Systems: Description and Operation
Headlamp washer
Washing
1. Washing off
2. Washing on
3. Spray pattern
4. Washer nozzle.
The XC90 has a system to clean the headlamp lenses. This is telescopic with double nozzles installed in the bumper under each headlamp.
Function
- Each telescopic arm consists of a hollow piston which runs inside a cylinder
- When washing, the pressure of the washer fluid presses the piston out
- When the piston is in the deployed position, a relief valve opens and the fluid can move into the nozzle
- When the pressure drops again, a return spring returns the piston into the cylinder
- The washer nozzle has a unique spray pattern
- The telescopic arm has a stroke of 120 mm
- Color coordinated covers lie over the bumper in the resting position.
Note! Each washer nozzle is specially adapted for either the right or left-hand headlamp. Color coded: Right =gray, Left = black.

Pump
An electrical centrifugal pump increases the pressure of the fluid in the system. The windshield washer fluid presses the pistons out and then flows out through the nozzles and cleans the
headlamps.
- The pump is on the windshield washer reservoir at the pumps for the front and rear windshields
- The motor is activated for 1 second for each wash
- Maximum pump pressure = 4 bar
- Output: 180 W.
Washing
Approximately 1 dl of washer fluid is used for each wash.
The capacity of the windshield washer reservoir is 6.5 liters.
