Rear Vision Camera: Testing and Inspection
Rearview Camera System, Calibrating
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B)
• Calibration tool for lane changing assist (VAS 6350/4)
• Wheel Center Sensor (VAS 6350/1)
• Spacing laser (VAS 6350/2)
• Line Laser (VAS 6350/3)
After performing service work on the vehicle, it may be necessary to calibrate the rear view camera system anew. In detail, this is the case after:
• Rear View Camera (R189), removing and installing.
• Rear View Camera System Control Module (J772), removing and installing.
• Collision repairs on rear lid.
• Rear axle repairs.
Preparations before Starting Work
Vehicle must stand on a firm and level surface to perform the calibration. No persons may be in the vehicle interior during the measurement. Vehicle must not be moved during the measurement, opening and closing of vehicle doors is to be avoided. The rear lid is closed.
- Connect (VAS 5051B).
- Bring the Steering Angle Sensor (G85) into 0-position (wheels straight ahead).
Overview of Assembled Calibration Equipment
1 Wheel Center Sensor (VAS 6350/1)
2 Wheel Center Sensor (VAS 6350/1)
3 Right Angle Bracket
• Spacing laser (VAS 6350/2) mount
4 Plastic Foot
• Three on the underbody of the calibration device (VAS 6350/4).
• Adjustable in order to adjust horizontal position of (VAS 6350/4).
5 Line Laser (VAS 6350/3)
• On (VAS 6350/4).
• Switching on and off, refer to the operating instructions.
6 Spacing Laser (VAS 6350/2)
• Notes on operation, refer to the operating instructions.
7 Water Level
• On Calibration Device (VAS 6350/4).
• For checking the horizontal.
8 Left Angle Bracket
• (VAS 6350/2) mount
9 Calibration Tool for Lane Changing Assist (VAS 6350/4)
• Between the corners of the calibration device (VAS 6350/4) and the wheel center sensor (VAS 6350/1) - dimension A - 1.47 m to 1.90 m
Mount and Adjust the Calibration Device (VAS 6350/4).
- Check which hole circle the rims have.
- Install the Wheel Center Sensor (VAS 6350/1).
- To do so, secure three (VAS 6350/1) in the hole circle to each wheel pick-up.
- Attach paddles to both (VAS 6350/1) and secure them with clamping screw.
- Place (VAS 6350/1) on wheel bolts on rear wheels.
The (VAS 6350/1) are positioned by the "O-rings" in the adapters and held in place.
• Mount the (VAS 6350/1) on the wheel so that if the wheel has anti-theft wheel bolts, they do not contact the (VAS 6350/1).
- Set the paddles via the clamping screw so that they are free to move just above the ground.
Make sure the paddles move easily.
- Position the (VAS 6350/4) behind the vehicle at a distance of 1.47 m to 1.90 m to the rear wheels, see - dimension A - in the illustration.
- Bring (VAS 6350/4) to a horizontal position.
- To do so, twist plastic feet under (VAS 6350/4) so that air bubble in level is located exactly in the center of the indicator - arrow -
CAUTION!
Make sure light does not reflect off the (VAS 6350/4).
Reflections affect the rear view camera (R189) and may make it impossible to perform the calibration.
- Switch on the line laser (VAS 6350/3) - 1 - on the (VAS 6350/4) and then align the (VAS 6350/4) so that the laser beam from the (VAS 6350/3) is pointed to the center of the Audi rings.
- Make sure the Audi rings are centered on the rear. Adjust the laser beam as needed.
- Switch Spacing Laser (VAS 6350/2) on with ON button.
The following display appears and the (VAS 6350/2) turns on.
- Hold the (VAS 6350/2) - 2 - on one side of the (VAS 6350/4) even with the bracket. The (VAS 6350/2) must sit securely on the bracket.
- Make sure that laser beam from (VAS 6350/2) hits lower, enlarged part of paddle - 1 -.
If this is not the case, paddles must be corrected accordingly via clamping screws on the (VAS 6350/1)
- With one hand, firmly hold the (VAS 6350/2) in the bracket on the (VAS 6350/4) while the laser beam is visible on the paddle.
- Now press the ON button briefly for the distance measurement.
Display readout
- Note the value read off.
- Repeat measuring procedure in the same manner for the other rear wheel on the other side of the (VAS 6350/4).
The distance value must be the same on both sides.
If values are not identical:
- Adjust the (VAS 6350/4) until values on both sides are identical.
When aligning the (VAS 6350/4) make sure the (VAS 6350/3) from the (VAS 6350/4) till strikes the center of the Audi rings and the indicator of the level remains centered. If necessary, make further corrections.
- Measure the height of the (VAS 6350/4), dimension - H - (top edge platform - floor).
The measured distance and height must now be entered in the (VAS 5051B) in "millimeters".
Performing Calibration
Select "Guided Function" in the (VAS 5051B).
- Select the corresponding vehicle data in the "vehicle selection" menu.
- Select "rear view camera system".
- Select "functions".
- Select "Calibration".
The (VAS 5051B) guides the user through the calibration procedure.
CAUTION!
Make sure light does not reflect off the (VAS 6350/4).
Reflections affect the rear view camera (R189) and may make it impossible to perform the calibration.
