Rear Vision Camera: Testing and Inspection
Rearview Camera System, Calibrating
After performing service work on the vehicle, it may be necessary to calibrate the rear view camera system anew. In detail, this is the case after:
• Rear view camera (R189), Removing and Installing
• Rear view camera system control module (J772), Removing and Installing
• Collision repairs on rear lid
• Rear Axle Repairs
Preparations before starting work
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system (VAS 5051B)
• Calibration tool (VAS 6350)
• Spacing laser (VAS 6350/2)
Preparations before starting work
Vehicle must stand on a firm and level surface to perform the calibration. No persons may be in the vehicle interior during the measurement. Vehicle must not be moved during the measurement, opening and closing of vehicle doors is to be avoided. The rear lid is closed.
- Connect (VAS5051B).
- Bring the Steering Angle Sensor (G85) into 0-position (wheels straight ahead).

Mount and adjust calibration device (VAS 6350/4).
- Check the number of bolts in the wheels.
- Install the wheel center sensor.
- To do so, secure three wheel center sensor in the hole circle to each wheel pick-up.
- Attach paddles to both wheel center sensor and secure them with clamping screw.
- Place wheel center sensor on wheel bolts on rear wheels.
The wheel center sensor are positioned by the O-rings in the adapters and held in place.
• Mount the wheel center sensor on the wheel so that if the wheel has anti-theft wheel bolts, they do not contact the wheel center sensor.
- Adjust paddle with aid of lock screws so that they move freely just above the floor.
Make sure the paddles move easily.
- Position the calibration device behind the vehicle, 1.47 to 1.9 meters from the rear wheels, refer to - dimension A - in the overview, Sedan /Avant.
- Bring calibration device to a horizontal position.
- To do so, twist plastic feet under calibration device so that air bubble in level is located exactly in the center of the indicator - arrow -
CAUTION!
Make sure light does not reflect off the calibration device.
Reflections affect the rear view camera and may make it impossible to perform the calibration.
- Switch on the line laser - 1 - on the calibration device and then align the calibration device so that the laser beam from the line laser is pointed to the center of the Audi rings.
Sedan
Avant
- Make sure the Audi rings are centered on the rear. Adjust the laser beam as needed.
- Switch spacing laser on with ON button.
The following display appears and laser is switched on.
- Hold the spacing laser - 2 - on one side of the calibration device even with the bracket. The spacing laser must sit securely on the bracket.
- Make sure that laser beam from spacing laser hits lower, enlarged part of paddle - 1 -.
If this is not the case, then the paddle must be corrected accordingly via the screws on the wheel center sensor.
- With one hand, firmly hold the spacing laser in the bracket on the calibration device while the laser beam is visible on the paddle.
- Now press the ON button briefly for the distance measurement.
Display readout
- Note the value read off.
- Repeat measuring procedure in the same manner for the other rear wheel on the other side of the calibration device.
The distance value must be the same on both sides.
If values are not identical:
- Adjust the calibration device until values on both sides are identical.
When aligning the calibration device make sure the line laser from the calibration device till strikes the center of the Audi rings and the indicator of the level remains centered. If necessary, make further corrections.
- Measure the height of the calibration device, dimension - H - (top edge platform - floor).
The measured distance and height must now be entered in the diagnostic operation system in millimeters.
Performing calibration
CAUTION!
Make sure light does not reflect off the calibration device.
Reflections affect the rear view camera and may make it impossible to perform the calibration.
