Blower Motor: Service and Repair
Fresh Air Blower
Removing
- Switch off ignition.
- Remove the plenum chamber cover.
CAUTION!
Even when the engine is cold, both pump/valve unit valves can be hot.
- Remove the windshield wiper arm and cowl panel trim
- If necessary, remove the dome brace (not present in all vehicles).
- Remove the air intake unit upper cover => [ Air Intake Unit Upper Cover ] Air Intake Unit Upper Cover.
- Remove the fresh air blower control module (J126) => [ Fresh Air Blower Control Module ] Fresh Air Blower Control Module.
CAUTION!
The heat sink of the Fresh Air Blower Control Module (J126) may be hot.
- Disconnect the connectors - C -, - D - and - F - at the various components.
- Loosen the grommet - B - from the air intake unit housing and lay the wiring harness - A - aside.
- Carefully loosen the connecting element - B - from the control motor - A - (e.g. with a screwdriver).
CAUTION!
The connecting rod - C - is engaged on the recirculation door lever - D -. This lever will break if it is bent over the connecting rod.
- Bring the connecting rod - C - and connecting element - B - into a position where they will not be bent when removing the Fresh Air Blower (V2).
- Remove the bolts - A - (quantity: 5).
CAUTION!
Do not grasp fan wheel of Fresh Air Blower (V2), force against the fan wheel or shifting the balancing weights fastened to fan wheel may cause imbalance and then problems during operation.
- Remove the Fresh Air Blower (V2) - B - carefully. Be sure not to bend the connecting element - C -.
Installing
- Check the position of control motor shaft - E - for the Air Recirculation Door (V113) (it must be located in the position depicted).
• Control motor shaft - E - does not have a stop, it rotates continuously when voltage is applied to terminals 5 and 6 on the control motor connector - A -. Therefore, when actuator is removed, voltage is only to be applied if connecting element - B - is attached.
• If the control motor shaft - E - is rotated 180°, the connecting element - D - cannot be inserted into the control motor without pretension.
• If the control motor shaft - E - is so awkwardly positioned that connecting element cannot be attached, connect terminals 5 and 6 of the control motor via a 5A fuse to a 12 V battery e.g. using an adapter lead => [ Preparing Adapter Cables for Control Motor Actuation ] Preparing Adapter Cables for Control Motor Actuation or an auxiliary lead from the Connector Test Kit (V.A.G 1594/C).
• Rotate the control motor until the shaft - E - is located in the position depicted and the connecting element can be inserted without pretension, the turning direction can be reversed by swapping Plus and Minus.
• Make sure the connecting element is seated correctly. There must be no play between the control motor mount and the connecting element.
- Assemble the Recirculation Door Motor (V113) and the Fresh Air Blower (V2) => [ Recirculation Door Motor ] Recirculation Door Motor.
- Insert the Fresh Air Blower (V2) - B - carefully. Be sure not to bend the connecting elements - C -.
- Insert the connecting element - B - carefully into the shaft - E - of the control motor - A -.
CAUTION!
The connecting rod - C - is engaged on the recirculation door lever - D -. This lever will break if it is bent over the connecting rod.
- Check the connection between the connecting element - B - and the control motor shaft. The connecting element must be engaged.
- Install bolts - A -.
- Hand-tighten mounting bolts - A - (10 Nm).
- Install the grommet - B - and wiring harness - A - according to the illustration.
- Connect the connectors - C -, - D - and - F - at the various components.
- Install the fresh air blower control module (J126) => [ Fresh Air Blower Control Module ] Fresh Air Blower Control Module.
- Before installing the air intake unit upper cover, make sure the connectors - A - and - B - are seated correctly and the cable is routed correctly.
- Install the removed components again in reverse order.
- Check the DTC memory for the Climatronic Control Module (J255) A/C control head and erase any faults displayed if necessary => Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System VAS 5051.
- Perform a basic setting and output diagnostic test mode on the A/C system.
