Evaporator Case: Service and Repair
Cleaning A/C System Evaporator
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Ultrasound A/C Cleaner (VAS 6189A)
• Cleaning Fluid (VAS 6189/1)
• Suction Nozzle With Brush (VAS 6288)
• Standard vacuum cleaner
• The odor can only be removed by cleaning with the (VAS 6189A) if it originates in the evaporator.
• Numerous procedures varying in their application and effect are available on the market for cleaning the evaporator. Currently Audi offers the (VAS 6189A) which has been approved and released for cleaning the evaporator.
Procedure
- Check whether the odor is actually in the A/C system evaporator by switching from fresh air mode to recirculation mode. Refer to => [ Causes of A/C System Odor ] Causes of A/C System Odor.
- Check the cowl panel trim and plenum chamber cover for damage and correct assembly.
- Check the water drains and plenum chamber, clean if necessary. Refer to => [ Checking and Cleaning Plenum Chamber Water Drain ] Testing and Inspection.
- Remove the dust and pollen filter. Refer to => [ Dust and Pollen Filter ] Service and Repair.
- Clean the dust and pollen filter installation shaft, refer to => [ Installation ] Service and Repair.
- Seal the opening for the dust and pollen filter in the A/C unit.
- Start the engine.
- Open the instrument panel vents, close the windows and sunroof of the vehicle.
Vehicles with Basic A/C System
- Switch on "recirculation mode" at the Climatronic control module (J255) , and switch off the A/C compressor.
• The indicator lamp in the button - 8 - illuminates.
• The indicator lamp in the button - 6 - illuminates.
- Set the lowest possible temperature.
• Temperature knobs - 2, 5 - in the cold position.
- Set the air flow direction to the instrument panel vents via the air distribution button - 7 -.
- Set the lowest blower speed on the fresh air blower knob - 4 -.
Vehicles with Comfort A/C System
- Switch on "recirculation mode" at the Climatronic control module (J255) , and switch off the A/C compressor.
• The indicator lamp in the button - 6 - illuminates.
• The indicator lamp in the button - 9 - illuminates.
- Set the lowest possible temperature.
• Temperature knobs - 1, 5 - in the cold position.
- Use the air distribution button - 7 - and the knobs - 1, 5 - to set the air flow direction to the instrument panel vents.
- Use the fresh air blower button - 9 - and the knobs to set the lowest blower speed.
- Set the lowest possible temperature on the Rear A/C display control head (E265).
• Temperature knobs - 2, 7 - in the cold position.
- Use the air distribution button - 4 - and the knobs - 2, 7 - to set the air flow direction to the center console vents.
- Use the fresh air blower button - 5 - and the knobs to set the lowest blower speed.
For All Vehicles
- Shake the bottle with the Cleaning fluid (VAS 6189/1) and pour it into the (VAS 6189A).
• Refer to the Operating Instructions that come wit the (VAS 6189A).
- Place the (VAS 6189A) in the front passenger footwell.
- Start the (VAS 6189A) (according to operating instructions) and route the associated outlet hose so that vapor escaping via the A/C unit recirculated air opening (in the front passenger footwell behind the glove compartment) is drawn in by the Fresh air blower (V2).
- Close the vehicle doors.
• The cleaning procedure lasts approximately 15 to 20 minutes. It is complete when vapor no longer escapes from the outlet hose of the (VAS 6189A).
- Switch off the (VAS 6189A).
- Open the vehicle doors and air out the vehicle for at least 10 minutes.
- Remove the (VAS 6189A) from the vehicle and clean it.
- Switch off the ignition.
- Install the dust and pollen filter. Refer to => [ Dust and Pollen Filter ] Service and Repair.
