Water Pump: Service and Repair
Coolant Recirculation Pump (V50)
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Hose Clamps Up To Diameter 25 mm (3094)
• Hose Clip Pliers (VAS 6340) (or Spring Type Clip Pliers (VAS 5024/) )
Removing
- Switch off the ignition (and parking heater).
- Remove plenum chamber cover - A -,
• To prevent water from running via intake shaft - C - into the A/C unit when plenum chamber cover - A - is installed, plenum chamber cover - A - must not be damaged. Moreover, plenum chamber cover - A - must be correctly and completely engaged in frame - D - of windshield - B -,
• Bracket - E - for the coolant recirculation pump - A - and the coolant shut-off valve (N82) or the heater coolant shut-off valve (N279) - F - is not bolted directly to the body in order to reduce noise. To reduce noise, attachment at the bolts is performed with rubber elements. Ensure that these components do not come in direct contact with the body or with other components.
• This illustration shows the arrangement of the coolant recirculation pump and the coolant shut-off valve in a vehicle with an 8 cylinder FSI engine. Depending on the vehicle equipment, the arrangement of the coolant recirculation pump and coolant shut-off valve (or heater coolant shut-off valve) may deviate.
- Label the arrangement of coolant hoses - C - and - D - at the coolant recirculation pump.
• Pay attention to the correct arrangement of the coolant hoses at the coolant recirculation pump - B - and - C -.
• If the coolant hoses are interchanged or crushed, there may be no heating in the passenger compartment.
- Release pressure in cooling circuit by opening cap on coolant expansion tank.
- Cover the area under the coolant recirculation pump with an absorbent rag or absorbent paper.
- Disconnect coolant hoses - B - and - C - in the area of the coolant recirculation pump (for example with (3094) ).
- Loosen the hose clamps and remove coolant hoses - B - and - C -.
- Disconnect connector - B -.
- Remove securing bolts - E - from bracket - E -.
- Remove coolant recirculation pump - A -.
Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse order, when doing this note the following.
- Install the coolant hoses in a flush-mounted manner.
• Pay attention to the flow direction for the coolant at the coolant recirculation pump.
• Ensure correct arrangement of coolant hoses - C - and - D - at the coolant recirculation pump.
• Interchanged coolant hoses can result in failure of the passenger compartment heater due to the incorrect flow direction of the coolant.
- Bleed the coolant circuit while observing the relevant instructions, refer to => [ Coolant Circuit, Bleeding ] Coolant Circuit, Bleeding.
- If necessary, check the activation and function of the coolant recirculation pump using Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in the "Guided Fault Finding" function.
- Install the remaining components.
