Pressing the buttons on the Climatronic control module (J255) , or the rear A/C control head for an extended period of time (for example if an object is lying on them) can cause a fault to be stored in the event memory indicating that the buttons are stuck. If necessary, check the function of the buttons and erase the event memory if no malfunction is found.

The rear A/C control head is available in different versions. When replacing a rear A/C control head, therefore be sure to use the correct allocation using Electronic Parts Catalog.

In the case of the rear A/C control head, the component protection function is currently not effective (introduction of this function not yet finalized). Check using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in the "Guided Fault Finding" function.

The selected functions are indicated by illumination of the LEDs in the various buttons of the rear A/C control head.

The display fields and control buttons of the rear A/C control head are illuminated by LEDs (these LEDs cannot be replaced).

If a new rear A/C control head was installed and the basic setting was not performed, the A/C system control is limited and this is displayed in the event memory as a malfunction. Check using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in the "Guided Fault Finding" function.

After replacing the Climatronic control module (J255) , and/or rear A/C control head, conduct the basic setting, check the adaptation, and check the event memory of the A/C system using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in the "Guided Fault Finding" function.

Certain A/C system functions can be switched on and off via the MMI (Multi Media Interface) under the "A/C system" function in the "car"/"car systems" menu. The A/C system control can also be influenced via presettings in the MMI (Multi Media Interface) under the "A/C system" function in the "car"/"car systems" menu. Therefore, first check the presetting in the MMI in the case of a problem with these components, refer to Infotainment/MMI operating instructions.

At the start of production, a rear A/C control head - A - was installed only for vehicles with a rear A/C system. A different version of the rear A/C control head - B - is installed for the Audi A8 hybrid without a rear A/C system (with rear air distribution housing). This version of the rear A/C control head may be installed, depending on the version of the vehicle from MY 2013 and also the specified market and for other vehicles without a rear A/C system.

This illustration shows both versions of the rear A/C control head respectively with the buttons for the heated rear seat activation and the rear seat ventilation. Ensure the correct allocation to the vehicle and the Climatronic control module (J255) front A/C display and control head. Refer to the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in the "Guided Fault Finding" function and the Electronic Parts Catalog (ETKA).

Removing

- Check the coding and the adaptation of the rear A/C control head via the "replace control module" function of the Guided Fault Finding (if the rear A/C control head is to be replaced) using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in the "Guided Fault Finding" function.

To prevent damage to the rear A/C control head and the center armrest during removal, do not pull too tightly or press.

Do not damage the surface of the center armrest during removal of the rear A/C control head (cover it if necessary).

- Switch off the ignition.

- Open cup holder - B -.

- Cover the trim of the rear center armrest so that it is not crushed or damaged during removal of the rear A/C control head - A -.

Depending on the vehicle equipment, trim can be installed here instead of a cup holder - B -.

The rear A/C control head - A - is held by clamps - C - in the mounts of center armrest - E -. Depending on the holding force of clamps - C -, the force needed to remove the rear A/C control head - A - differs.

- Carefully remove the rear A/C control head - A - in the - direction of the arrow - from the installation shaft in the rear center armrest.

Depending on the holding force of clamps - C -, the rear A/C control head - A - can be removed with the fingers or with a (3370) - F -.

- Disengage connector locking mechanism safety catch - C - of connector - A - by pulling it in the direction of the arrow - arrow -.

- Press connector locking mechanism - D - toward the connector - arrow - and remove connectors - A -.

- Release the catches of connector locking mechanism - B - by pressing retaining tabs - D - and remove the connector.

Installing

Installation is carried out in the reverse order while observing the following.

When replacing a rear A/C control head - A -, ensure exact allocation using Electronic Parts Catalog.

Check clamps - C - for proper seating on brackets - D - of the rear A/C control head - A -.

To prevent damage to the cover of the center armrest, carefully insert the rear A/C control head - A - into the receiving shaft and then press in.

- After replacement/installation of the rear A/C control head, perform the following steps using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester in the "Guided Fault Finding" function:

Recode the rear A/C control head (or check the coding).

Perform the basic setting of the rear A/C control head

Check the event memory of the rear A/C control head and the Climatronic control module (correct any displayed malfunctions) and erase.

Check the adaptation of the rear A/C control head and correct if necessary.

Perform the output diagnostic test mode of the rear A/C control head (depending on the present complaint).
