Parking Brake Shoe: Service and Repair



Parking Brake Shoe Replacement

Removal Procedure
Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution (Brake Dust Caution) .

1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair) .
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair) .
3. Remove the rear brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (Service and Repair) .




4. Remove the park brake shoe pins (1) by compressing the hold down springs (2) and rotating the spring 1/4 turn.




5. Rotate the adjuster screw to retract the park brake shoes.
6. Remove the park brake shoe adjuster spring (1).




7. Spread the park brake shoes and remove the park brake shoe adjuster (1).
8. Disassemble the park brake shoe adjuster and lubricate the adjuster screw threads with high temperature brake lubricant.




9. Remove the park brake shoe assembly (1) from the backing plate by spreading the park brake shoes apart.
Pull the park brake shoe assembly over and off of the actuator.
10. Remove the park brake shoe return spring (2) from the park brake shoes.
11. Clean the park brake shoe backing plate.
12. Lubricate the park brake shoe to backing plate contact points with high temperature brake lubricant.



Installation Procedure





1. Assemble the park brake shoes (1) to the return spring (2).
2. Install the park brake shoe assembly to the backing plate by spreading the park brake shoes apart.
Position the park brake shoe assembly over the actuator.




3. Assemble the park brake shoe adjuster.
4. Spread the park brake shoes and install the park brake shoe adjuster (1).




5. Install the park brake shoe adjuster spring (1).




6. Install the park brake shoe pins (1) by compressing the hold down springs (2) and rotating the spring 1/4 turn.
7. Install the rear brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (Service and Repair) .
8. Adjust the park brake. Refer to Park Brake Adjustment (Adjustments) .
9. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair) .
