Radio, Stereo, and Compact Disc: Description and Operation
The Radio System consists of the Radio Control Head, the Radio Receiver Box and the Speakers. The functions of each are described below.
RADIO CONTROL HEAD
The Radio Control Head contains all of the control functions for the Radio, Cassette Player and Compact Disc Player. When a Radio function control button is depressed, a signal is sent to the Radio Receiver Box on the data line. The Radio Receiver Box decodes this signal and performs the function selected (I.E. Fade, Volume, Station Select).
If equipped with a Cassette Player and/or a Compact Disc Player, the audio signals from the Cassette tape or Compact Disc are sent to the Radio Receiver Box for processing using the left and right audio lines.
Power to the Radio Control Head is supplied by the Radio Receiver Box. The Receiver Box also supplies ground to the Control Head. The RADIO Fuse supplies voltage to the Control Head at all times to allow the time display to be energized with the Ignition "OFF."
RADIO RECEIVER BOX
The Radio Receiver Box processes the Radio Control functions as well as processing the audio signals from either the Cassette Player or Compact Disc Player. The Receiver Box also amplifies the audio signals that are sent to the speakers.
The Radio Receiver Box receives its power from the RADIO Fuse which is hot at all times and from WPR Fuse which is hot in "RUN" or "ACCY." The Radio Receiver Box uses this voltage to supply power to the Radio Control Head.
SPEAKERS: NON DELCO~BOSE
With the non Delco-Bose system, the audio outputs are amplified within the Radio Receiver Box and sent directly to the speaker.
SPEAKERS: DELCO.BOSE
The Delco-Bose Music System uses an Amplifier Relay to drive four speaker units mounted in the passenger compartment. A shielded cable carries the audio signal from the Radio Receiver Box back to the Amplifier/Speaker Units.
Battery voltage to the Amplifier Relay is supplied though the CTSY Fuse. The Amplifier Relay also gets battery voltage from the Radio Receiver Box when the Radio Control Head is switched to "ON." This applies voltage to the coil of the Amplifier Power Relay. The relay contacts close to supply battery voltage to the Amplifier/Speaker Units.
ENTERTAINMENT AND COMFORT DATA LINE (E & C BUS)
This line is used to transmit various control signals from the Radio Control Head to the Receiver Box. This line is also connected to the ALDL connector Pin "J" for Tech 1 use.
A Tech 1 with an E & C Bus cartridge, when plugged into the ALDL connector, effectively imitates the Radio Control Head for diagnostic purposes.
