Diagnostic Fault Information

Circuit/System Description

The body control module (BCM) supplies a 12 V signal to the door latches and the rear compartment lid latch. When a door is open, the switch within the door latch closes providing a ground path for the ajar signal which causes to voltage to drop to 0 V The BCM will detect the voltage drop and then communicates this status to the instrument panel cluster (IPC) via a serial data message. The IPC, upon receipt of this serial data message, will illuminate the ajar icon.

The BCM also supplies a 12 V signal to the ajar switch within the rear compartment lid latch, this switch is closed then the trunk lid is closed and the switch is open when the trunk lid is open or ajar. The normal voltage state with in the ajar signal circuit is 0 V when the trunk is closed and firmly latched. When the trunk is opened, the ajar switch open causing the voltage to rise to 12 V and just as when a door is ajar or open, the BCM will send a serial data message to the IPC to command the ajar icon to illuminate.

Circuit/System Verification

1. Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Driver Door Ajar Sw parameter while opening and closing the driver door. The parameter should change between Door Closed and Door Ajar.

If the value does not change, refer to Driver Door Ajar Malfunction.

2. With the passenger and rear doors closed, observe the scan tool Passenger Door Ajar Sw. parameter while opening and closing each door. The parameter should change between Door Closed and Door Ajar.

If the value does not change, refer to Passenger Door Ajar Malfunction.

3. Observe the scan tool Rear Closure Ajar Sw parameter while opening and closing the trunk lid. The parameter should change between Inactive and Active.

If the value does not change, refer to Trunk Ajar Malfunction.

Circuit/System Testing

Driver Door Ajar Malfunction

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the A23D door latch assembly-driver.

2. Test for less than 10 ohms between the ground circuit terminal 8 and ground.

If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

3. Ignition ON, verify the scan tool Driver Door Ajar Sw parameter and is Door Closed.

If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal 6 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K9 BCM.

4. Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 6 and the ground circuit terminal 8. Verify the scan tool Driver Door Ajar Sw parameter is Door Ajar.

If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K9 BCM.

5. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the A23D door latch assembly-driver.

Passenger Door Ajar Malfunction

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the passenger, left rear and right rear door latch assemblies.

2. Test for less than 10 ohms between the ground circuit terminal listed below and ground.

* A23LR door latch assembly-left rear ground circuit terminal 6

* A23RR door latch assembly-right rear ground circuit terminal 3

* A23P door latch assembly-passenger ground circuit terminal 3

If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

3. Ignition ON, verify the scan tool Passenger Door Ajar Sw. parameter is Door Closed.

If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal listed below for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K9 BCM.

* A23LR door latch assembly-left rear signal circuit terminal 4

* A23RR door latch assembly-right signal circuit terminal 1

* A23P door latch assembly-passenger signal circuit terminal 1

4. Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal and the ground circuit terminal listed below. Verify the scan tool Passenger Door Ajar Sw. parameter is Door Ajar.

* A23LR door latch assembly-left rear signal circuit terminal 4 and ground circuit terminal 6

* A23RR door latch assembly-right signal circuit terminal 1 and ground circuit terminal 3

* A23P door latch assembly-passenger signal circuit terminal 1 and ground circuit terminal 3

If not the specified value, test the appropriate signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K9 BCM.

5. Connect the harness connector at the A23P door latch assembly-passenger.

6. Observe the scan tool Passenger Door Ajar Sw. parameter while opening and closing the passenger door. The parameter should change between Door Closed and Door Ajar.

If the value does not change, test or replace the A23P door latch assembly-passenger.

7. Connect the harness connector at the A23LR door latch assembly-left rear.

8. Observe the scan tool Passenger Door Ajar Sw. parameter while opening and closing the left rear door. The parameter should change between Door Closed and Door Ajar.

If the value does not change, test or replace the A23LR door latch assembly-left rear.

9. Connect the harness connector at the A23RR door latch assembly-right rear.

10. Observe the scan tool Passenger Door Ajar Sw. parameter while opening and closing the right rear door. The parameter should change between Door Closed and Door Ajar.

If the value does not change, test or replace the A23RR door latch assembly-right rear.

11. If all circuits test normal, replace the K9 body control module.

Trunk Ajar Malfunction

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the M40 rear compartment lid latch.

2. Ignition ON, verify the scan tool Rear Closure Ajar Sw parameter is Active

If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal 1 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K9 BCM.

3. Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 1 and ground. Verify the scan tool Rear Closure Ajar Sw parameter is Inactive.

If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal 4 for a short to voltage or and open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K9 BCM.

4. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the M40 rear compartment lid latch.

Component Testing

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate A23 door latch assembly.

2. With the switch in the open position, test for infinite resistance between the signal and the ground terminals listed below:

* A23D door latch assembly-driver terminal 6 and ground terminal 8

* A23LR door latch assembly-left rear signal terminal 4 and ground terminal 6

* A23RR door latch assembly-right signal terminal 1 and ground terminal 3

* A23P door latch assembly-passenger signal terminal 1 and ground terminal 3
