Water Pump: Service and Repair




Water Pump Replacement (V8)

Removal Procedure

Note:
The water pump is not a serviceable item and should be replaced as an assembly.

Warning:
Refer to Battery Disconnect Warning Battery Disconnect Warning.


1. Disconnect the battery ground cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary)Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary).

2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling Cooling System Draining and Filling.

3. Remove the air outlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement.

4. Remove the engine drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory.

Warning:
Refer to Radiator Cap Removal Warning Service Precautions.


5. Remove the coolant pressure cap.

6. Detach the inlet hose.
7. Detach the outlet hose. Refer to Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement (LFX) Radiator Outlet Hose ReplacementRadiator Outlet Hose Replacement (L77) Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement.





8. Detach the heater hoses (1) from the water pump (2).

9. Remove drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement - Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement - Accessory.





10. Remove the water pump to engine retaining bolts (1).

Note:
Use of a soft hammer will aid in the removal of the water pump (2).

11. Remove the water pump (2).

12. If replacing, remove the engine coolant thermostat housing and engine coolant thermostat. Installation Procedure

1. If required, install a NEW engine coolant thermostat and engine coolant thermostat housing. Refer to Engine Coolant Thermostat Replacement (V8) Service and RepairEngine Coolant Thermostat Replacement (V6) Service and Repair and Engine Coolant Thermostat Housing Replacement (V6) Service and RepairEngine Coolant Thermostat Housing Replacement (V8) Service and Repair.





Note:
Ensure all mating surfaces are clean and free of grease.

2. Insert two water pump to engine retaining bolts (1) at each end of the pump, place the new gasket of the bolts and use this as a guide to install the pump.

3. Install the water pump (2).

Caution:
Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.

4. Install and tighten the remaining water pump to engine retaining bolts (1) and tighten to 15 Nm (11 lb ft).

Tighten the bolts at final pass to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).

5. Install drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement - Accessory Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement - Accessory.

6. Install the outlet hose to the water pump. Refer to Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement (LFX) Radiator Outlet Hose ReplacementRadiator Outlet Hose Replacement (L77) Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement.

7. Install the inlet hose to the water pump.





8. Install the heater hoses (1) to the water pump (2).

9. Install the engine drive belt.

10. Install the air outlet duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement Air Cleaner Outlet Duct Replacement.

11. Install the ground battery lead to the vehicle. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary)Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary).

12. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling Cooling System Draining and Filling.

13. Inspect cooling system for leaks.

14. Connect the battery ground cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Primary)Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary) Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Auxiliary).
