Compressor Replacement (L18)
Tools Required
J 39400-A Halogen Leak Detector
Removal Procedure
1. Remove the right wheelhouse panel. Refer to Wheelhouse Panel Replacement Service and Repair in Body Front End.
2. Remove the air cleaner outlet front duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Front Duct Replacement Air Cleaner Outlet Front Duct Replacement in Engine Controls - 8.1L.
3. Recover the refrigerant from the system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging.
4. Remove the drive belt from the A/C compressor pulley. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement Service and Repair in Engine Mechanical - 8.1L.
5. Disconnect the electrical connector from the compressor.
Important: When removing the sealing washers, prevent dirt and foreign material from getting on the following sealing surfaces:
* The washers
* The hose fitting (2,5)
Use a lint-free cloth in order to clean all of the sealing surfaces.
6. Remove the compressor hose bolt.
7. Disconnect the compressor hose.
8. Remove the compressor sealing washers and discard.
9. Remove the refrigerant hoses from the compressor.
10. Remove the following components from the compressor:
* The bolts (1)
* The washers (2)
11. Remove the compressor (3) from the drive belt tensioner bracket (4).
Installation Procedure
1. Add the proper amount of PAG oil to the compressor. Refer to Refrigerant System Capacities [1][2]Capacity Specifications.
2. Position the compressor (3) onto the drive belt tensioner bracket (4).
3. Install the following components:
* The compressor bolts (1)
* The washers (2)
Important:
* When installing the sealing washers, prevent dirt and foreign material from getting onto the sealed surfaces of the following components:
- The washers
- The hose fittings
* Clean all of the sealing surfaces with a lint-free cloth.
* Do not oil the sealing washers prior to assembly.
4. Install the NEW sealing washers onto the pilots of the fittings. Ensure that the washers bottom against the surface of the hose fittings.
5. Connect the refrigerant hoses to the compressor.
6. Install the compressor hose bolt.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
Important: Ensure that there is a 1.2 mm (0.047 in) space between the hose fittings and the compressor rear head.
7. Hold the clamp in place. Install the washer (4) and hand tighten the compressor hose fitting bolt (3).
Tighten the bolt to 35 Nm (26 lb ft).
8. Install the electrical connector to the compressor.
9. Install the compressor mounting bolt.
Tighten the bolts to 52 Nm (38 lb ft).
10. Install the drive belt to the A/C compressor pulley. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement Service and Repair in Engine Mechanical - 8.1L.
11. Install the air cleaner outlet front duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Front Duct Replacement Air Cleaner Outlet Front Duct Replacement in Engine Controls - 8.1L.
12. Recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging.
13. Leak test the fitting(s) of the component using the J 39400-A .
14. Install the right wheelhouse panel. Refer to Wheelhouse Panel Replacement Service and Repair in Body Front End.
