Compressor Replacement (LG5)

Tools Required

J 39400-A Halogen Leak Detector

Removal Procedure

1. Remove the right wheelhouse panel. Refer to Wheelhouse Panel Replacement Service and Repair in Body Front End.
2. Recover the refrigerant from the system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging.
3. Remove the air cleaner outlet front duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Front Duct Replacement Air Cleaner Outlet Front Duct Replacement in Engine Controls - 8.1L.
4. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement Service and Repair in Engine Mechanical - 8.1L.
5. Disconnect the electrical connector from the compressor.




6. Remove the compressor hose bolt (2).
7. Disconnect the compressor hose from the compressor.

Important: When removing the sealing washers, prevent dirt and foreign material from getting onto the following sealing surfaces:


* The washers

* The hose fitting

* The compressor ports


Use a lint-free cloth in order to clean all of the sealing surfaces.


8. Remove the compressor sealing washers.
Discard the compressor sealing washers.
9. Remove the refrigerant hoses from the compressor.




10. Remove the following components from the front of the compressor:

* The nuts
* The bolts
* The washers

11. Remove the following components from the rear of the compressor:

* The nut
* The bolt
* The washers

12. Remove the compressor.

Installation Procedure

1. Fill the compressor. If the compressor is being replaced, refer to Refrigerant System Capacities [1][2]Capacity Specifications.

Important:
* When installing the sealing washers, prevent dirt and foreign material from getting onto the sealed surfaces of the following components:


- The washers

- The hose fitting

- The compressor ports


* Clean all of the sealing surfaces with a lint-free cloth.

* Do not oil the sealing washers prior to assembly.


2. Install the NEW sealing washers onto the pilots of the hose fitting.




3. Ensure that the washers (4) bottom against the surface of the fitting (1).
4. Install the refrigerant hose fitting on the compressor.
5. Install the compressor hose bolt.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.

Important: Ensure that there is a 1.2 mm (0.047 in) space between the fitting and the compressor rear head.


6. Hand tighten the block fitting bolt.

Tighten the bolt to 35 Nm (26 lb ft).

7. Install the following parts on the rear of the compressor:

* The bolt
* The washers
* The nut




8. Install the following parts on the front of the compressor:

* The bolts
* The washers
* The nuts

- Tighten the front mounting bolts to 53 Nm (39 lb ft).
- Tighten the rear mounting bolt to 45 Nm (33 lb ft).

9. Connect the electrical connector.
10. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement Service and Repair in Engine Mechanical - 8.1L.
11. Recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging.
12. Install the air cleaner outlet front duct. Refer to Air Cleaner Outlet Front Duct Replacement Air Cleaner Outlet Front Duct Replacement in Engine Controls - 8.1L.
13. Leak test the fitting(s) of the component using the J 39400-A .
14. Install the right wheelhouse panel. Refer to Wheelhouse Panel Replacement Service and Repair in Body Front End.
