Radiator Cooling Fan: Service and Repair
Cooling Fan and Shroud Replacement (LZ9)
Removal Procedure
Caution: An electric fan under the hood can start up even when the engine is not running and can injure you. Keep hands, clothing and tools away from any underhood electric fan.
Caution: To help avoid personal injury or damage to the vehicle, a bent, cracked, or damaged fan blade or housing should always be replaced.
1. Remove the air cleaner and duct assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement (Service and Repair).
2. Remove right side diagonal brace. Refer to Front End Sheet Metal Diagonal Brace Replacement (Pontiac) (Service and Repair)Front End Sheet Metal Diagonal Brace Replacement (Chevrolet) (Service and Repair).
3. Remove radiator inlet hose. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement (LZ9) (Service and Repair).
4. Disconnect the cooling fan harness electrical connector (1).
5. Loosen the engine mount strut nuts at the engine side.
6. Remove the engine mount strut bracket brace bolts from the upper radiator support and rotate the struts and brackets rearward.
7. Remove the overflow hose (1) from the retainers.
8. Disconnect the radiator outlet hose retainer from the fan shroud.
9. Remove the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement (Battery Replacement).
10. Remove the radiator upper mount bolts.
11. Remove the radiator upper mounts.
12. Remove the cooling fan shroud bolts.
13. Disconnect the upper transmission oil cooler (TOC) line from the radiator. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Hose/Pipe Quick-Connect Fitting Disconnection and Connection (Service and Repair).
14. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
15. Remove the radiator air baffle. Refer to Radiator Air Baffle Assemblies and Deflectors (Service and Repair).
16. Disconnect the TOC lines from the fan shroud retainer clip.
17. Lower the vehicle.
18. Remove the cooling fan shroud and fans.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the cooling fan shroud and fans.
2. Raise the vehicle.
3. Connect the TOC lines to the fan shroud retainer clip.
4. Install the radiator air baffle. Refer to Radiator Air Baffle Assemblies and Deflectors (Service and Repair).
5. Lower the vehicle.
6. Connect the upper TOC line to the radiator. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Hose/Pipe Quick-Connect Fitting Disconnection and Connection (Service and Repair).
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice (Fastener Notice).
7. Install the cooling fan shroud bolts.
Tighten the bolts to 6 N.m (53 lb in).
8. Install the radiator upper mounts.
9. Install the radiator upper mount bolts.
Tighten the bolts to 10 N.m (88 lb in).
10. Install the battery. Refer to Battery Replacement (Battery Replacement).
11. Connect the radiator outlet hose retainer to the outlet hose retainer.
12. Install the overflow hose (1) to the retainers.
13. Position the engine mount struts brackets flush with the upper radiator support.
14. Install the engine mount strut bracket brace bolts to the upper radiator support.
Tighten bolts to 28 N.m (21 lb ft).
15. Tighten the engine strut mount nuts at the engine side.
Tighten the nuts to 48 N.m (35 lb ft).
16. Connect the cooling fan harness electrical connector (1).
17. Install the radiator inlet hose. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement (LZ9) (Service and Repair).
18. Install right side diagonal brace. Refer to Front End Sheet Metal Diagonal Brace Replacement (Pontiac) (Service and Repair)Front End Sheet Metal Diagonal Brace Replacement (Chevrolet) (Service and Repair).
19. Install the air cleaner and duct assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement (Service and Repair).
