Timing Belt: Service and Repair

Removal


1. Remove PCV tube and upper timing belt cover screws and cover, Fig. 17.
2. Remove accessory drive belt.
3. Raise and support vehicle and remove righthand wheel and inner splash shield.
4. Remove water pump and crankshaft pulleys.

5. Remove lower accessory drive belt idler and tensioner pulley, Fig. 18.
6. Remove lower timing belt cover screws and cover.
7. Lower vehicle.
8. Lift engine with engine support tool No. 4852 or equivalent and separate right engine mount.

9. Raise and support vehicle. Remove lower accessory drive belt idler and tensioner pulleys and bracket assembly, Fig. 19.
10. Loosen timing belt tensioner, remove timing belt and idler pulley.

Installation

1. Remove air cleaner duct and the ignition cable cover.
2. Remove valve covers and loosen rocker arm assemblies about three turns, Fig. 12.

3. Align and pin both intake and exhaust cam sprockets with 3/16 drills or pin punches, Fig. 26. Accessory shaft does not need to be timed.
4. Install a dial indicator in No. 1 spark plug hole.
5. Rotate crankshaft until No. 1 cylinder is at top dead center. Mark the engine block for TDC reference.

6. Install timing belt and idler pulley in sequence shown in Fig. 27.
7. Remove dial indicator and drills or pins from camshaft sprockets.
8. Install belt tensioner gauge on timing belt between camshaft pulleys and adjust tension to 110 ft. lbs.
9. Rotate crankshaft clockwise two full turns and check alignment of camshaft and crankshaft. Do not rotate crankshaft counterclockwise or attempt to rotate engine using cam or accessory shaft attaching screw.
10. Check belt tension, adjust if necessary.

11. Tighten rocker arm shafts in sequence shown to specification, Fig. 13.
12. Install valve covers, spark plug, ignition cable and ignition cable covers.
13. Reverse remaining removal procedure to complete installation.
