Timing Belt: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
Pre-removal Operation:
- Crankshaft Pulley Removal.

Follow removal steps outlined in illustration.

Removal Service Points
A. Power Steering Oil Pump Disconnection.
Remove the power steering oil pump from the bracket with the hose attached.

NOTE: Place the removed power steering oil pump in a place where it will not be a hindrance when removing and installing the timing belt, and tie it with a cord.

B. Engine Mount Bracket Assembly Removal.
Place a garage jack against the engine oil pan with a piece of wood in between, jack up the engine so that the weight of the engine is no longer being applied to the engine mount bracket, and then remove the engine mount bracket.





C. Timing Belt Removal.
1. Align camshaft timing marks and crankshaft timing mark with arrow on oil pump housing.
2. Install a 8 mm Allen wrench into the timing belt tensioner. Insert the long end of a 1/8" or 3 mm Allen wrench into the pin hole on the front of the tensioner.
3. Rotate the tensioner counterclockwise with the Allen wrench, while pushing in lightly on the 1/8" or 3 mm Allen wrench, until it slides into the locking hole.
4. Remove timing belt.

CAUTION: Do not rotate the camshaft or crankshaft after removing the timing belt, or valve components may be damaged. Always align timing marks before removing timing belt.

D. Timing Belt Tensioner Assembly Removal.

CAUTION: The timing belt tensioner is serviced as an assembly. To prevent premature timing belt failure and engine damage, do not separate the tensioner pulley from mounting bracket.

INSTALLATION
Installation in reverse order as removal.

Installation Service Point





A. Timing Belt Installation.
1. Set the crankshaft sprocket to TDC by aligning the sprocket with the arrow on the oil pump housing, then back off to 3 notches before TDC.





2. Set the camshafts timing marks together by aligning notches on sprockets.





3. Rotate the crankshaft 1/2 tooth counterclockwise from TDC.





4. Install the timing belt. Starting at the crankshaft, go around the water pump sprocket, idler pulley, camshaft sprockets and then around the tensioner pulley.
5. Move the crankshaft sprocket to TDC to take up belt slack.
6. Release the tensioner by removing the pin or Allen wrench from the belt tensioner.
7. Rotate the crankshaft 2 revolutions and check the alignment of the timing marks. If marks are not aligned correctly, do it again.
