Quick Test Operation
QUICK TEST OPERATIONQuick Test is performed by retrieving KOEO, KOER, and Continuous Memory DTCs (CMDTCs).
Special Notes
Before running Quick Test, always perform the necessary visual checks and safety precautions listed below.
Visual Check
- Inspect the air cleaner and inlet ducting.
- Check system wiring harness for proper connections, bent or broken pins, corrosion, loose wires, proper routing, etc.
- Check the PCM, sensors and actuators for physical damage.
- Check the engine coolant for proper level and mixture.
- Check the transmission fluid level and quality.
- Make all necessary repairs before continuing with Quick Test.
Vehicle Preparation
- Perform all safety steps required to start and run vehicle tests. Apply parking brake, place shift lever firmly into PARK position (NEUTRAL on manual transmission), block drive wheels, etc.
- Turn off ALL electrical loads - radios, lights, A/C, blower, fans, etc.
- Start engine and bring up to normal operating temperature before running Quick Test.
Quick Test Operation
For all concerns, refer to the Symptom Charts. Quick Test is performed by retrieving KOEO, KOER and Continuous Memory DTCs. If a DTC is retrieved, you must then go to the appropriate Pinpoint Test. If unable to complete a self-test, GO to Pinpoint Test AE. Symptom Charts Tests AE: Unable to Activate Self Test Comm Error/DTC Not Listed
Key On Engine Off (KOEO) On-Demand Self-Test
KOEO On-Demand Self-Test
NOTE: It is necessary to wait 4 seconds after key on to initiate the KOEO self-test. Failure to do so will result in a "test fail PCM" message to be displayed.
Connect the scan tool. Turn off accessories. If vehicle is equipped with an auxiliary powertrain control (RPM control), it must be turned off to perform self-tests.
- Perform the necessary vehicle preparation and visual inspection. Refer to Quick Test Operation.
- Refer to the manufacturer manual for scan tool instructions.
NOTE: The following steps must be performed for the powertrain and transmission control modules.
- Select KOEO ON DEMAND SELF-TEST.
- Turn key on.
- Wait 4 seconds for PCM and FICM to initialize completely.
- Follow operating instructions from the menu.
- Record DTCs and follow appropriate pinpoint test.
- After test cycle key to off before running other tests or driving vehicle.
If performing repeated self-tests, it may be necessary to unplug the GPCM to keep battery from going dead. Ignore any glow plug codes while the GPCM is unplugged.
Key On Engine Running (KOER) On-Demand Self-Test
KOER On-Demand Self-Test
Connect the scan tool. Turn off accessories. Turn A/C off. If vehicle is equipped with an auxiliary powertrain control (RPM control), it must be turned off to perform self-tests.
NOTE: Engine may run rough during this test.
- Perform the necessary vehicle preparation and visual inspection. Refer to Quick Test Operation.
- Refer to the manufacturer manual for scan tool instructions.
NOTE: The following steps must be performed for the powertrain and transmission control modules.
- Select KOER ON DEMAND SELF-TEST.
- Follow operating instructions from the menu.
- Record DTCs and follow appropriate pinpoint test.
- After test, cycle key to off before running other tests or driving vehicle.
Retrieve/Clear Continuous Memory DTCs (CMDTCs)
Connect the scan tool. Turn off accessories. If vehicle is equipped with an auxiliary powertrain control (RPM control), it must be turned off to perform self-tests.
- Perform the necessary vehicle preparation and visual inspection. Refer to Quick Test Operation.
- Refer to the manufacturer manual for scan tool instructions.
NOTE: The following steps must be performed for the powertrain and transmission control modules.
- Select RETRIEVE/CLEAR CONTINUOUS MEMORY DTCs.
- Turn key on.
- Follow operating instructions from the menu.
- Record DTCs and follow appropriate pinpoint test for continuous memory DTC diagnostics.
- After test cycle key to off before running other tests or driving vehicle
- Continuous memory DTCs must be cleared after repair is made.
Key On Engine Off (KOEO) Injector Electrical Self-Test
Note: If no DTCs are present refer to Performance Diagnostic Procedures Performance Diagnostic Procedures and carry out the Power Balance test 6b. If the KOEO injector electrical self-test aborts while trying to activate, refer to Injector Interrupt for Enhanced Diagnostics Injector Interrupt For Enhanced Diagnostics.
The KOEO injector electrical self-test is an on-demand functional test of the FICM carried out with the key ON and the engine OFF. This test determines if the injector circuits and coils are correctly operating. If a concern is detected by the FICM, a CAN message is sent to the PCM. Corresponding DTCs are displayed at the end of the self-test.
- Turn off all accessories. If the vehicle is equipped with a power take-off (PTO) system or auxiliary idle control, it must be turned off to carry out self-tests.
- Carry out the necessary vehicle preparation and a visual inspection. Refer to Quick Test Operation.
- Refer to the scan tool operating manual for instructions.
- Key ON, engine OFF.
- Carry out the KOEO Injector Electrical Self Test.
- Key in OFF position.
- Record the DTCs and carry out the appropriate pinpoint test.
KOEO/KOER Output State Control
Connect the scan tool. Turn off accessories. If vehicle is equipped with an auxiliary powertrain control (RPM control), it must be turned off to perform self-tests. The outputs will be limited during KOEO output state control.
- Perform the necessary vehicle preparation and visual inspection. Refer to Quick Test Operation.
- Refer to the manufacturer manual for scan tool instructions.
- Select KOEO/KOER output state control.
- Follow special instructions on screen.
- Use scan tool to access output PIDs.
- Cycle output state on EGR, ICP, injectors, vistronic fan, VGT, RPM and fuel pump.
- Select PIDs.
- Activate OSC.
- After test, cycle key to off before running other tests or driving vehicle.
- Clear the DTCs.
KOER Glow Plug Monitoring Self-Test
Connect the scan tool. Turn off accessories. Turn A/C off. If vehicle is equipped with an auxiliary powertrain control (RPM control), it must be turned off to perform self-test.
NOTE: When running this self-test, battery voltage must not drop below 10 volts or go above 14 volts. Make sure that batteries are OK and the charging system is working properly. If necessary, press the accelerator pedal to maintain specified voltage.
- Perform the necessary vehicle preparation and visual inspection. Refer to Quick Test Operation.
- Using a digital multimeter connected to the battery, monitor voltage. It may be necessary to raise RPM to maintain voltage.
