Alternator: Service and Repair
Generator
Removal
NOTE: The radial arm adapter is a serviceable item. Do not replace the generator if the radial arm adapter is the only concern.
All vehicles
1. Disconnect the battery. For additional information, refer to Battery.
2. Remove the engine cover.
3.7L vehicles
3. Position the upper radiator hose aside and remove the radiator hose support cradle.
All vehicles
4. Position the generator protective cover aside, remove the B+ nut and position the B+ terminal aside.
5. Disconnect the generator electrical connector and position the harness aside.
3.5L non-Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection (GTDI) vehicles
6. Remove the cooling fan assembly. For additional information, refer to Cooling System &/or Engine Block Heater.
3.5L non- GTDI and 3.7L vehicles
7. Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner and remove the accessory drive belt from the generator.
3.5L GTDI vehicles
8. Remove the A/C compressor.
All vehicles
9. Remove the upper generator nut and stud.
10. Loosen the lower generator bolt.
11. Remove the generator.
Installation
All vehicles
1. Install the generator and hand-tighten the lower generator bolt.
2. Install the upper generator stud and nut.
- Tighten the generator stud to 8 Nm (71 lb-in).
- Tighten the generator nut to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).
3. Tighten the lower generator bolt to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft).
3.5L GTDI vehicles
4. Install the A/C compressor.
3.5L non-GTDI and 3.7L vehicles
5. Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner and install the accessory drive belt on the generator.
3.5L non-GTDI vehicles
6. Install the cooling fan assembly. For additional information, refer to Cooling System &/or Engine Block Heater
All vehicles
7. Connect the generator electrical connector.
8. Install the generator B+ terminal and tighten the B+ terminal nut to 17 Nm (150 lb-in).
3.7L vehicles
9. Install the upper radiator support cradle and reposition the upper radiator hose.
All vehicles
10. Install the engine cover.
11. Connect the battery cable. For additional information, refer to Battery
